Small 90 degree reflector

I discovered this small reflector over two years ago while trying to find a stable 90 degree reflector.
Code: Select all
# small 90 degree reflector
# April 2007 Emerson Perkins
#CXRLE Pos=-2,9
x = 14, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo4b2o$3o4b2o4$7b2obo$7b2ob3o$13bo$7b2ob3o$8bobo$8bobo$9bo!
Once the glider reaches the eater the block turns into a glider at 90 degrees in just 7 generations. Although it is not a stable reflector, it only requires one block to reset and do it again. Interestingly, the eater recovers and will consume any gliders following on the same track.
I have tried various ways to rebuild the block, but this reflector is so efficient that there is no spark to work with. But I did find a stable 2g to H converter using this same initial pattern. A 2 glider salvo is converted to a Herschel and the block is replaced by the Herschel reaction, ready to go again. This could be useful when constructing in tight spaces. I did have trouble getting the herschel to enter into a herschel conduit because the still life in the conduit gets in the way of the next incoming salvo.
When I compare the reflector with the ones in the Golly blockic reflectors it rates a quick -4 generations in making the turn and belongs in the left column.
I want to post this so maybe someone can do more with it. I have not used Herschel conduits much.
The 2g to H reaction below is a recent attempt to let the herschel escape:
Code: Select all
#C 2g to H stable reaction with 74 gen reload
#CXRLE Pos=-21,-31
x = 38, y = 53, rule = B3/S23

knightlife, you should probably remove all those #CXRLE lines when posting patterns here. Golly only processes such lines if they are at the *start*, so in your examples they never actually do anything anyway.

The Fx119 conduit can be bolted on to let the Herschel escape:
Code: Select all
x = 44, y = 37, rule = S23/B3

By the way, these partial reflectors are
exactly the sort of device I'm looking for.
For example, Dieter discovered this:
Code: Select all

o$3o$3bo$bboo3$5bo$4bo$4b3o$$12boo$5boo5bobo$5boo7bo$14boo6$6boo$6boo!
which I managed to incorporate into stable reflector that recovers in just 487 ticks:

I will do that.

Calcyman, thanks for the Herschel escape, I am not up to speed on Herschel conduits.
One of my favorite reflectors makes two gliders, one turns 90 degrees left and one turns 90 degrees right
in a clean collision reaction:
Code: Select all
x = 13, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

A simple one-time switch can be made using your reflection reaction:
x = 92, y = 59, rule = S23/B3

16b3o$17b3o13bo$19bo3$59boo$59bobo$59bo28$89boo$89bobo$89bo!
(The F117 is added as a proof of concept; it is not part of the switch.)

Cool. The H-to-Block reaction can "store" a Herschel as a block that can then be reactivated at a later time.
This also reminds me of a memory bit (the block) that has a destructive readout.
Ancient computers used "core memory" that had destructive readout but was still useful.
After readout the state of the memory bit has to be restored.
I am sure a Herschel circuit could be designed to implement this kind of memory bit.
In other words I think this switch could be made into a permanent switch by using the reflected glider to
come back and restore the block. A separate mechanism would then either "set" or "reset" the bit.
The "set" is already implemented (H-to-Block) and the "reset" is easy: destroy the block directly (not using the reflect reaction).
However, I am pretty sure there is a better way to make a permanent switch.

Yes. Dave Greene has made the most compact latch so far.
However, I've built a much larger alternative, which consists of just blocks, eaters and beehives. It contains an ingenious block toggle switch developed by Brice Due, protected using a bistable switch.
It's used (to good effect) in my infamous Spartan universal computer-constructor:

Speaking of clean collision reactions, I have made a collection of reflectors and duplicators out of single types of still lifes. I have been having trouble with loaves. EDIT: Never mind: got it. Now working on ships and loaves. EDIT: Whoops! I meant carriers, which by now is done. EDIT: Ships are done, and feel free to post your own single-still-life type destructive reflector.
P.S. Credit me with the idea of single still lifes making destructive reflectors.
Addendum: An R-pond collision that produces a MWSS along with some other debris.
Code: Select all
x = 9, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

EDIT: Changed "single still life" to "single still life type".

Here's a single-still-life 90-degree reflector that came up when I was running some patterns that showed up in the Soup Search; it's made up of a single boat.
Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

Don't forget about the eater.
It is also a 90 degree reflector by itself.
The eater tends to get used only as an eater.
Code: Select all
x = 8, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

it's made up of a single boat.
That result has been known for ages (decades, possibly?). You're not alone - most of us (including me, admittedly) have re-invented wheels before!
Addendum: An R-pond collision that produces a MWSS along with some other debris.
Wow! Adding a passive block can turn the honeyfarm into a glider, without destroying the block. Only the loaf remains.

That works, I guess. But what I meant was to have multiple instances of a single type of still life to destroy themselves and simultaneously reflect the glider. See "blockish-and-blockic-seeds.rle" in Golly for examples with blocks.

A small 90 degree reflector which uses half of a LOM (result) with the help of an eater:
Code: Select all
x = 15, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
2o$2o3$b2o$b2o3$12b2o$5b2o5bobo$5bo6bo$6b3o$8bo!
If the other half of the LOM could be inhibited with catalysts then only two gliders are needed to restore the two blocks:
Code: Select all
x = 44, y = 33, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo$3o7$3bo$3b2o$2bobo3$17b2o$17bo$18b3o$20bo13$41b2o$41bobo$41bo!
So far I have not found a catalyst solution.

This mod of Dieter's partial reflector makes an extra glider.
The "bait" is reconstructed, but in a different way.
Actually it is a one-time glider duplicator that costs only one biblock to rebuild.
Code: Select all
x = 56, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
