Tips and tricks for using scripts and search programs

This a thread for your tips, tricks, techniques, and other strategies for using scripts and search programs. Ideally, it will come together in a similar format to MDIOCA, with people posting tips as well as commenting on tips other people's posts.

As an example, here are some input files to rlifesrc which specify oblique pillars as the only searchable space. These work pretty well for finding (2,1)c/5 ships. You want to search in the direction of the pillar (I don't remember rlifesrc formats anymore, but just mess around for a bit) and specify an area large enough to find a ship but small enough that it doesn't go out of the template space and start adding a bunch of ? in weird spots
