The Topic Hierarchy

I have no other place to put this, so I’m putting it in The Sandbox. This is mainly defining what you should and shouldn’t talk about here, since the forums don’t seem to completely allow off-topic posts.

Tier 1: Normal discussion

Tier 1 includes CA, programs related to CA, and websites related to CA. This is the discussion that typically happens outside of The Sandbox. This is on-topic.

Tier 2: Adjacent topics

Tier 2 includes mathematics, computer science, and programming. There are mostly no restriction on these topics, other than being restricted to The Sandbox. This is also on-topic.

Tier 3: Community overlap topics

Tier 3 includes music theory and linguistics. I’m not sure what restrictions these face. These are on-topic in some definitions, but should be treated as off-topic.

Tier 4: Off-topic

Tier 4 includes everything else. Tier 4 either faces a lot of restrictions or isn’t allowed at all, unless it can be connected to CA in some way. As the name suggests, this is off-topic.

Did you talk with the mods about this or are you speaking for them?

Tier 3.5: (no name)

This tier includes threads that are games, but that people think they do not belong to tier 4 (or CA-themed games). The restrictions are unknown.

I consider mathematics, computer science, and programming to be on-topic for the sandbox. Everything else is off-topic, unless it relates to CA in some way. For example, the CA-based patterning of certain cone snails can be discussed. "Community overlap" does not influence what is considered on-topic. If you want to discuss linguistics or music theory here, the discussion needs to connect to CA.

Off-topic threads and posts could potentially be locked or deleted without warning. That doesn't mean they will be, so don't take a lack of moderator action as implicit permission to post off-topic content.

I sort the forum threads according to how they relate to CA.

Tier 1 is directly related to CA. Most threads in Pattern or Other Cellular Automata subforums are tiered 1.

Tier 2 is related to anything related to CA.
Most threads that belongs to General Discussion, Scripts or ConwayLife.com category should be tiered 2.

Tier 3 is related to anything indirectly related to CA.
Miscellaneous mathematics stuffs belongs to tier 3. However they are only on topic in Sandbox.

Tier 4 is related to anything vaguely related to CA, but may mostly off-topic.
Any CA game and roleplay threads are tiered 4.

Tier 5 isn't related to CA. This tier is considered off-topic.

As a semi-involved semi-observer, I can say that it was a collective effort, rather than being caused by actions or lack of actions of any single person.
