Re: OTTs (One Time Turners)
OTTs are too numerous to post individually. See here for an enourmous collection of OTTs. With that many useful OTTs, posting one at a time would crash the forums.HerscheltheHerschel wrote: November 25th, 2023, 10:40 am For example, this is a hook with tail + block OTT:Code: Select all
x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23 2o$bo$bob2o$2bobo3b2o$8b2o3$5b2o$5bobo$5bo!
This particular example seems like something that shouldn't be posted at all, except possibly in useless/accidental discoveries...

Yeah, OTTs are really useful when they're in huge collections, sorted and categorized into groups according to the output direction and timing -- so that you can easily go and find exactly the timing and output lane that's needed for a given purpose. But there's just no plausible way to make any use of OTTs that have been posted one at a time.EvinZL wrote: November 25th, 2023, 11:05 amOTTs are too numerous to post individually. Just to give a clear picture of how incredibly common these things are, here are some more hook-with-tail-and-block OTTs and OTSes (one-time splitters) that I turned up in a few minutes with Seeds of Destruction. At that rate we could probably find a few dozen, even with that same arbitrary limitation, if we wrote a search script to generate and test hook-with-tail and block constellations exhaustively:
Code: Select all
x = 120, y = 26, rule = B3/S23
23b2o$23b2o23b2o$48b2o$115b2o$16b2o35b2o21b2o38bo$17bo36bo22bo38bob2o$
17bob2o33bob2o19bob2o36bobo$18bobo34bobo20bobo2b2o28b2o$83b2o28b2o14$
90b3o$3o27b3o27b3o29bo$2bo29bo29bo28bo$bo29bo29bo!------------------------------
... All of that said, this is a good title for an OTT collection thread. At the moment it's probably too hard to find previous work on collecting and sorting OTTs, which also includes another ZIP collection in the post below the one EvinZL pointed to. Those zip files probably ought to be re-sorted and posted here, in some more usable form (but I haven't figured out what that form is yet.)
Any suggestions, or does anyone want to volunteer to work on this? At some point I might use Moderator Shenanigans(TM) to take over the first post of this thread, and keep it updated with collections and links, along the lines of other collection threads.

I agree with EvinZL, but this thread should not suffer the same fate as Conduit Discussion Thread.dvgrn wrote: November 25th, 2023, 11:30 amYeah, OTTs are really useful when they're in huge collections, sorted and categorized into groups according to the output direction and timing -- so that you can easily go and find exactly the timing and output lane that's needed for a given purpose. There's a lot you can do by just reassembling known components.

Not sure I understand what was wrong with what happened to the Conduit Discussion Thread, exactly. Does there seem to be any danger of this thread suffering the same fate? That thread definitely seemed to be not needed -- whereas this one could be potentially useful, as long as nobody thinks that it's meant for posting OTTs one at a time.hotcrystal0 wrote: November 25th, 2023, 12:28 pm I agree with EvinZL, but this thread should not suffer the same fate as Conduit Discussion Thread.
Re: OTTs (One Time Turners)
To emphasize that, perhaps would be interesting to rename the thread as "OTT collections". Not sure if OT Heisenburps deserves a similar treatment.dvgrn wrote: November 25th, 2023, 12:38 pm ... this one could be potentially useful, as long as nobody thinks that it's meant for posting OTTs one at a time.
Just note that we are always talking about gliders, although other spaceships have their own set of OTs/OTHs. This is one of my favourites:
