b35s238

An interesting rule on the boundary between complexity and simplicity. With 2 gliders known(https://catagolue.hatsya.com/census/b35s238/C1)
My question is how many spaceships does this rule have? Are there more then 2 that could be found with apgsearch? Are there glider guns? note most patterns quickly decay into still lifes

this rule is very quick to search. If anyone wants to search it feel free to. Together i think we can discover a 3rd spaceship

This 5c/37o (according to a Catagolue comment, it is known as Eppstein's glider 8214) appeared in the D4_+2 census.

Edit: this post lists several other known speeds.

If a gun exists, probably it would be hard to find (unless you're lucky). The most common spaceship (2c/5o = Eppstein's glider 3736) has 351 090 occurrences in 2 414 101 395 soups in b35s238/C1 - approximately 1 occurrence in every ~6900 soups.

Could there be any diagonal c/2 spaceships in this rule?

No. The speed limit is c/4 diagonal, or c/2 orthogonal. c/2d requires B1e or B2a. If you are interested in finding speceship speeds, I'd recommend using ikpx2 or rlifesrc, and perhaps the best starting point in this rule would be c/5d, c/6d, or 2c/7o.

There's also this 196c/392o puffer from apgsearch:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 10, rule = B35/S238
18bo$2bobo9b4o2bo$2bo11bo6bo$b3o2bo4bo2bo6bo$o3b3o3bobo2bo2bob2o$obo2b
obo2bobo4b3o$3o2bob2o$4bo2bo$6bo$4b2o!
You can overview other known results at the Catagolue censuses.

EDIT: To answer your other question in the apgsearch thread, we have only this c/4d:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 11, rule = B35/S238

Sorry for like the 5th question but what would be a good program for finding a spaceship gun?

I wonder if this rule is Turing complete.

Yes! Just see the B35/S23 thread for a W110 emulator that is a polyglot.

Two-cell chaos maker in B35S238Investigator. Maybe this could be tamed into a high-period gun with additional cells.

Code: Select all

#C The state-8 cell is treated as "on" and turns on all adjacent state-0 cells.
#C The state-9 cell is treated as "off" and turns on all adjacent state-0 cells.
#C Otherwise, the rule is B35/S238.
