I've been doing a lot of OCA soup searching lately and am kinda interested in some of the current records in OCA, mostly with regards to soup searched rules. Was wondering if the OCA experts could share some of these superlatives. For example:
- Largest natural oscillator
- Highest period natural oscillator
- Largest natural spaceship
- Slowest natural spaceship
- Any other criteria y'all might find interesting.
Apologies if this has been discussed before. I've seen the 5s project but this is more generalized.

Re: Superlatives in OCA
You would need to specify a lot of details before any proper answer comes up, like rulespace (multi-state, 2-state HROT, 2-state INT, ...), metric of "largest" (population, density, bounding box, ...), whether or not rules with natural adjustable things are allowed and so on, just to name a few.
And the term "natural" could also be problematic. For example, here is a natural p61248 oscillator I found:
Fantastic, right? Sure! But the fact is that I found the oscillator from another 5s-like search first, and did apgsearch on this particular rule later (select text to see what's hidden).
And the term "natural" could also be problematic. For example, here is a natural p61248 oscillator I found:
Code: Select all
x = 7, y = 15, rule = B3aeijq4cqt5jr6i7c/S2-ci3-ek4ei5aein6ac7e

Re: Superlatives in OCA
I'm gonna add a superlative that aims to be objective at the cost of throwing out "natural"
What is the largest-period 3-cell ship in any INT cellular automaton?

That's a question that can be answered with 5s. It is 40c/8802 orthogonal:andrewph33 wrote: November 6th, 2021, 5:16 pm I'm gonna add a superlative that aims to be objective at the cost of throwing out "natural"

Okay, what about the slowest?LaundryPizza03 wrote: November 10th, 2021, 7:54 amThat's a question that can be answered with 5s. It is 40c/8802 orthogonal:andrewph33 wrote: November 6th, 2021, 5:16 pm I'm gonna add a superlative that aims to be objective at the cost of throwing out "natural"
What is the largest-period 3-cell ship in any INT cellular automaton?Among diagonal ships, we have 3c/2460 diagonal:Code: Select all
x = 2, y = 3, rule = B2-a3aqry4cnwyz5-cjkq6-an7e8/S1c3-nqy4ackntw5-ijkr6in78 o$bo$o!Lastly, for oblique ships, we have an (8,3)c/844:Code: Select all
x = 3, y = 2, rule = B2ik3acikr4iknqt5cjnry6ci7c/S01e2aen3-aeq4ciktyz5-ck6eik obo$o!I'm not sure if there is a higher-period ship in a B0 rule, which is outside the scope of 5s.Code: Select all
x = 3, y = 2, rule = B2kn3aciry4cknqtw5acjny6n8/S01e2ae3-aeq4ikqtyz5-ck6ce7c 2bo$obo!
Re: Superlatives in OCA
There are several rules discussed on this board that:
given a ship with speed x, it is easy to construct a ship with speed < x.
The best example of such a discussion is:

I believe this is the best thread on this entire forum!
