To me, Codd is one of the more interesting "useful" rules, and I have plenty of things to show, some useful, some just for fun. Here are a list of components that I have created:

Code: Select all

Just a note: The oscillator at the very top left has a VERY LARGE period -- I have run Oscar.pl to just over a million generations and it still hasn't settled. Smaller versions are to the bottom right. (These oscillators behave something like binary counters constricting themselves, kind of like the p40894 oscillator in Hickerson's stamp collection), except that this one is arbitrarily extensible (actually the p40894 is probably also extensible, but Hickerson failed to mention those extensions in his stamp collection).

Somewhere in between (in terms of usefulness) is this silly little fuse that doesn't destroy anything:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 2, rule = Codd
B$15D!
That's a 6-character RLE file (excluding dimensions and that of the like) for 16 cells. Not bad, in terms of compression.

EDIT: Here are some more stoppers:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 14, rule = Codd

26B!
Recently, I've been investigating what happens to an end after the sequence purple-purple-any-any (-any).

Is there a constructed or natural glider in Codd or relative automata?

None that I know of, and I imagine there are none of the natural variety, given that natural soups tend to not change.

I'm pretty sure Codd was not designed for universal destruction, so spaceships are most likely impossible.

I disagree with this. Actually, Hungarian mathematicians extended Codd's transition table in order to extend capabilities like small 3x3 crossover, destroying etc. ISBN 963 280 665 4. page 198.: "Szőke Mariann: Bontás a Codd-ICRA sejttérben". She extended these 4 main terms:

Code: Select all

2 0222 3
3 0222 0
2 0003 0
3 2222 0
And with some other transition rules generating oscillating parts in gates without any serious side effects.

That's technically not Codd though.

arm splitter

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 6, rule = Codd

The rule is omniperiodic, obviously.

A weird fuse. Has anyone found a reburnable fuse?
EDIT: There are already a lot of reburnable fuses known in this rule.

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 3, rule = Codd
