B2a3ik4c/S2ce3c (Bits and Pieces)

I built this rule around making bi-pre-blocks and u-pentominoes (in Life) into spaceships and ended up finding more patterns than I had expected. I looked for the rule on catagolue and didn't find it in the Non-totalistic section so I've decided to name the rule Bits and Pieces because of how each spaceship part fits together. The Tub and Barge are still lifes in this rule. So far I've found 8 distinct period-adjustable oscillators based on replicators and 9 spaceships

C/1 Spaceships:

Code: Select all

x = 0, y = 0, rule = B2a3ik4c/S2ce3c

Not to discourage you, but the full-of-replicator-and-lightspeed-spaceships-and-puffers is really common in B2a rules. Have you considered making tubs destructable? They are universal eaters right now:

Well I haven't seen a lot of B2a rules yet but I get what you mean now that you say it, this probably isn't too special. Perhaps if tubs were destructable, it would be a more engineerable rule, I'll see about finding other rules that might have more reactions...

EDIT: Yeah now looking at rules like Seeds or Gluons, I see that light speed spaceships are a very common feature, but it spurs the question: Are there any spaceships in and B2 rules that go C/2 or slower?

Well, then https://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic ... ine#p64108 should be a good representative of these rules.

There are sub-lightspeed spaceship in Seeds and Live Free or Die.

Yeah, you can tell I'm new, perhaps I should check even more before I post and make sure it's absolutely original and useful. I can't delete this page, but let's just say it never existed. And thanks for answering my questions though, they should've gone on the basic questions thread though

No don't panic yet! This is a perfectly valid thread. I made even worse thread when I was new, such as...

Well I though about trying to make a gun for this rule but then I realized that most of the replicators are fragile in the sense that they die in most collisions, which sucks since they were probably the only thing that could perturb a reaction. Perhaps you smarter people could aid me.

EDIT: Making the B3i a B3iq allows the tubs to be destroyed by a certain interaction, but they can still eat and turn some replicators

EDIT 2: I said q, but actually meant k...

Huh. I found that reaction in a soup yesterday, but I didn't see that it was making those spaceships, probably because the other replicators in the mess were deleting them. Perhaps this gun could open up opportunities for some basic gates.

Two glider streams hitting each other is already a gate. With this gate you can build other gates.

...nvm, you need a splitter first, which I suspect won't be too hard.

Yeah splitters and reflectors would be very nice, I'll start working on finding and making some. In the meanwhile, perhaps it's time I name the ships. It's pointless to name the variations because there are so many because once more, there are so many spaceship pieces, so I'll just be naming the base of the ships that can function by itself (the engine)

Periodic reflectors are trivial.

Thank you for restart my interest on CA. This is my first serious pattern post here since I came back.
How does this prove that it's Turing complete exactly? I guess I could figure it out on my own but it would probably be too hard. When did you leave? You said you came back.
A splitter plus a two glider vanish reaction equals Turing Complete is a well known fact. With splitter and the two-glider vanish reaction, it's possible to build any gate.

I did not contribute to CA anymore after June (and tbh I was pretty much inactive at that time already). I was not here when you joined.

Which one is the two glider vanish reaction? Is it just eating?

It's this reaction:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B2a3i4c/S2ce3c
7bobo$7bo$7bo5$3o2$o!
Which effectively produces two outputs, one is "p && !q", the other is "q && !p". A splitter allows you to use a variable many times. With these, it's possible to build a Rule 110 metacell (@FWK).

Here's two reflector loops of different size:

I think experimenting with collisions and adjusting the replicator streams' length should be enough to make a gun actually.
