Rudy Rucker's CAPOW 98 was packed with a very cool screensaver, more cool because it was so obscure. However there is a new iteration of CAPOW now and they did not bother to put in the screensaver, because many people don't see the point of them. But, it's eye candy, people. I love mesmerising screensavers and I want it back. Anybody has the old CAPOW 98 installation package lying around and would do me the favour of uploading it?
I use: Kaleider SS, Magic Mirror, Zen Light, Zen Mandelbrot, Electric Sheep, Drempels, Glowing World and JuliaSaver, with CAPOW it will be complete.

Did I? I thought, well, CAPOW IS another program for cellular automata... Any suggestions?

You can get older versions of CAPOW from the Way Back Machine, e.g. here: https://web.archive.org/web/20090928013 ... nload.html
Hopefully it will work without too much hassle on Win10 - the 2007 version still has the screensaver and worked on Win7, so it should work ok.
Also, have you tried Visions of Chaos? It is a fantastic program for exploring a wide variety of fractals, cellular automata, and other dynamical systems. It has a screensaver mode, but I haven't used it myself so I can't vouch for it.
P.S. this is certainly an appropriate forum, but the OCA board is generally used to discuss the CA themselves. Simulation and other tools are normally discussed in either "Scripts" or occasionally "General". However, it's no big deal and in my opinion hardly worth worrying about.

Not a problem at all. People get a little bit paranoid around here, because we see a lot of bots posting duplicate copies of advertisements for software or services or whatever.gameoflifemaniac wrote: August 13th, 2020, 9:54 amoh, ok, sorrySnufke wrote: August 13th, 2020, 8:57 am Did I? I deleted the copy of this thread's first post from the Sandbox, since it had collected a report from somebody who was suspicious because of the duplication. Multiple identical posts aren't generally welcome around here. But obviously this is the absolute opposite of a bot-driven linked advertisement, since what you're doing is looking for a link but you can't find one!
I don't have any leads on 1998 CAPOW software, unfortunately. [EDIT D'oh, of course I should have thought of the Wayback Machine!] But the new Windows-10-compatible edition looks very interesting.
The source code is available on GitHub, so it probably wouldn't be too difficult to just hack a screensaver feature back in, if you really want one.
Be sure to check the Git history first, though, and see if the screensaver code is still there in the repository -- it might be retrievable.

I had a look at the commit history and it's just an initial commit of the current code plus documentation updates.dvgrn wrote: August 14th, 2020, 1:16 pm The source code is available on GitHub, so it probably wouldn't be too difficult to just hack a screensaver feature back in, if you really want one.

Re: CAPOW 98 screensaver
Thanks people for the friendly replies and attempts to help. I will try this Way Back Machine. And, mmm, I, uh, can't code. As such. *hangs head in shame* Full disclosure.
Re: CAPOW 98 screensaver
Woohoo, the Wayback Machine idea paid off and I have my screensaver back, which is working fine on Windows 10. Thanks again!
