Wireworld rule as electronic component, resistor(?) and diode.

Code: Select all

x = 57, y = 24, rule = WireWorld

The problem is capacitor. Can you build that??

Wireworld cannot simulate electronic components, for a multitude of reasons:
  • There is no notion of potential difference in Wireworld.
  • Wireworld is digital, whereas electronics are analogue.
  • There are no thermodynamic laws in Wireworld, and pulses can be duplicated.
Nevertheless, it might be possible to engineer a cellular automaton capable of simulating electronic circuits, if the electrons diffused through wires (using concentration to represent voltage). Resistors would occasionally 'leak' electrons, and (non-polar) capacitors would allow charges to build up on either side of the dielectric.

Diodes are more subtle than just one-way gates. They have an exponential law, the details of which I cannot recall at the moment. They can be used with op-amps to make exponential and logarithmic filters.

An oscillator with two reflectors:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 10, rule = WireWorld
.6C$C6.C$C.2C.C.C$.2C.3C$2.2C.A$5.B.2C$4.3C.2C$3.C.C.2C.C$3.C6.C$4.6C

Also this.

(But why did you post on a thread from...uh...6.5 years ago? I think this is the largest (in terms of time) necropost in the history of these forums.)

I believe there is nothing wrong with reviving old threads, as long as the new post fits into the old thread.
In this particular case, the new post is not relevant to the original thread, so there was no reason to post in it.
