Assuming finite patterns, the hierarchy of normal subgroups of spatial symmetries is:
- Every symmetry to itself
- Every symmetry to C1
- Every symmetry to index-2 sub-symmetry
- D8_1 to C2_1
- D8_4 to C2_4
