I don’t know why but yesterday I thought it would be funny if we all talked in different languages and not be able to figure out what each of us said.

Who knows, we might develop a conwaylife forum universal language from evolving and mashing our languages together somehow.

I agree. Also I plan to transtlate LifeWiki.

LifeWiki Chinese edition. Sounds good, right?

Suggestions:

包围块 -> 碰撞箱
介词不一定要translate,比如说“尾蜂巢”(beehive with tail) is better than“带尾的蜂巢”。Similarly,“配”这个词很奇怪。“上”会好点吗?
一个字is better than两个字,for example“桌”is better than“桌子”。“锅”会比“煎锅”好吗?

EDIT:

杧果?
舟 -> 小船
面包片 -> <s>扩散性百万甜</s>面包
“方者”是想笑死我……改成“块阻器”or something like that...
诱定器 -> 感应线圈

The concept of 碰撞箱 ("hitbox", isn't it?) seems to match Zone of influence better since it involves interactions (碰撞属于相互作用)。包围块 is a direct translation of bounding box.

I intended to make it similar to the Chinese chemical nomenclature, where we use prepositions like 化, 合, 代 and so on. There're probably some objects whose names differ in the preposition only.

Agree.
杧果?
That's the recommended name for mango in dictionaries.
舟 -> 小船
That conflicts your idea of using one word. 舟(boat)和船(ship) 不是同一系列,它们的区别看字形即可明白:舟比船的活细胞数少。
面包片 -> 面包
Isn't a loaf a slice of bread only?
“方者”是想笑死我……改成“块阻器”or something like that...
Thanks for your suggestion.
诱定器 -> 感应线圈
Disagree. 感应线圈(induction coil) is a term borrowed from electromagnetics, but its properties in CGoL doesn't resemble the physics as far as I see. Considering that their function is to "stabilize an edge (or edges) of another pattern without touching" (Lifewiki), I coined the name 诱定器。

The page on Pattern naming lists some conjunctions and prefixes. Here's my idea:

Code: Select all

On 配
At 接
And 与
Tie 连
Bridge 搭
Bi- 双
Mirrored 映
Rotated 旋
Siamese 并
Weld 杂
Cis- 顺
Trans- 反
Ortho- 邻
Meta- 间
Shift- 偏
Para- 对
Up 上
Down 下
Another issue I'd like to mention is about the infinite extensible families. I plan to denote the length with 甲,乙,丙,丁,戊,己,庚,辛,壬,癸,十一,十二,十三,...,like how we name straight alkanes. It will apply to boat, ship, canoe, barberpole and xWSS families.

The point of 感应线圈 is it produces 磁场 -> it stabilize another pattern without touching it.

It also do something like 磁悬浮.

When JHC named the boat, he probably thought of it as ship is a bigger version of it.

But yes, that does lead to problems like 长长长长船.

An induction coil creates a magnetic field with an electric current, but we don't power the induction coils in CGoL.
The "magnetic field" in cellular automata is still called zone of influence.

Well, the boat and ship does not move, but they are still called the boat and ship.

The thing is, it stablize things outside its zone of influence.

I see that EV2 made a variant block translation with his/her own ideas of names. Thanks for your efforts, though I'm not inclined to use transliteration (音译) often like what Chinese have done when introducing chemical nomenclature to China.

Hé pǔ duōmǐnuò? Phonetic? Is there a way to say "7-omino" (七多米诺?) I think it is very strange to take the Greek word for "seven" and transliterate it phonetically into Chinese. But apparently 多米诺 is a real Chinese word (Google translate) and it's obviously phonetic.

Or maybe 七米诺 (chimino) for 7-omino and 五米诺 (wumino) for 5-omino.

We call them 七联骨牌 and 五联骨牌 respectively. Monomino is often referred to as 单方块, domino is 多米诺, and any higher polyominos (多联骨牌) are named *联骨牌. Honestly I haven't heard about anything where greek numeral prefixes are translated phonetically into Chinese.
(By the way, there's no official translation for the similar term polyplet in Chinese yet; in Baidu's search results polyplet is the top one. Any suggestions other than transliteration?)

I suppose monomino is 单骨牌. 单方块 is closer to "single cell".

Thanks. I had a question that I deleted originally, but I wondered what is the term for mah jong tile. Google translate says "麻将牌" which includes the same character 牌 (pái) so maybe I was on the right track. (I don't speak or read Chinese but I studied a little with my kids some years back).

"bon ben" isn't an "actual" word, but a spoken French equivalent of "well"; and the end of the sentence was about how you're in luck I don't remember anything of what I learned during my German classes.
