I got quite annoyed at not being able to use make-ruletree.py, so I made a version that only imports the "sys" module:

Have fun making your ruletrees from the command line!

Why can't you use make-ruletree.py?
Which version of Golly do you have, and on what platform?
Have you installed Python?

I can't be bothered to install Python on a Windows machine when I can just putty in to my Linux box and use it there. And Golly on Linux is horrendously buggy.
There's absolutely no reason for make-ruletree.py to be tied to Golly, so I untied it. I would say that it's far more useful as a standalone script, as it can, for example, be run by a shell script.

Installing Python on Windows is a trivial exercise (see Help > Python Scripting for where to get the Python installer).
And Golly on Linux is horrendously buggy.
Sorry to hear that -- it runs fine on my Ubuntu and Debian systems. It's certainly true that Golly is horribly slow at rendering patterns on Linux systems (it seems that wxGTK is not as highly optimized as wxMSW). Golly runs much faster on a Windows box, so if you have a choice I'd always run it there.

Given that the script is used to create .tree files for use by Golly, I find that a somewhat strange statement! The script automatically creates the .tree file in the right location, and then switches to the rule ready for use. Very handy I would have thought.
