This is yet another multi-state rule. It has a simple replicator (which can be used to construct arbitrarily high-period oscillators) and an extensible wickstretcher. The replicator and eater made into an oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 20, rule = 235678/3678/3
.A.A.A$.5A$7A$A.3A.A8$2.3A$2.3A4$A.A.A.A$7A$.5A$.A.A.A!
Just move the top eater up by 2n cells, where n is an integer. The wickstretcher:

Code: Select all

x = 200, y = 50, rule = 235678/3678/3

What often happens is that one or more replicators form and they hit the large blob repeatedly, making it grow until it develops into an eater like the one posted above.

EDIT: A "controlled wickstretcher":

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 9, rule = 235678/3678/3
2.A.A.A.A.A.A.A.A.A.A.2A$23A$.23A$23A4.2A$.23A3.2A$23A4.2A$.23A$23A$

This replicator-based oscillator contains eaters that flip between two states each time they are hit:

Code: Select all

x = 46, y = 5, rule = 235678/3678/3
.A2.A36.A2.A$.4A24.2A2.2A6.4A$6A22.8A4.6A$.4A24.2A2.2A6.4A$.A2.A36.A
2.A!

Could this be used in some kind of toggle memory?

Yeah, I've known about that one for some time now, but I just didn't post it. Tug-of-war with two replicators and a block (p16):

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 32, rule = 235678/3678/3
.A.A.A$.5A$7A$A.A.A.A4$2.3A$2.3A6$2.2A$2.2A4$3.3A$3.3A8$.A.3A.A$.7A$
2.5A$2.A.A.A!
A similar two-stage eater:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 13, rule = 235678/3678/3
4.3A$4.3A4$2.2A.A.2A$3.5A$2.7A$11A$.9A$11A$.9A$.A.A.A.A.A!
