Does anybody know how they implemented the dark mixing pattern in the lower left:

A similar example can be found in Golly in Other-Rules > HPP-Demo.rle I'm not sure what you mean by how they implemented it. You can make a similar pattern by taking HPP-Demo.rle and cutting a hole in it.
