Perrier

Post by idonteven »

I'm pretty sure you've heard of this rule. The 64-state rule which has little "signals" running through "tubes" (That's what i call them at least), kinda like Codd, but it has a bunch of other stuff, and with 63 states, (Excluding 0) it has so much potential! I think that this rule is extremely interesting, and I want to learn more about it. But it's only used twice in Golly, and there really isn't much information on the internet about it, so is there any way i could learn more? Could you guys/gals give me some info?

There's some basic documentation on various loop rules, including Perrier, here.

Thank you for the information, but there is a little problem.
I have no idea what most of the states' purposes are, or what they do!
Having a guide of sorts on what the states do, even if it is complicated, would be a great help!
(Also, sorry if i sound relatively stupid when compared to others in the conwaylife community, I've loved Conway's game of life and other cellular automata for a long time, but i'm not an expert.)

Many multi-state rules have their states annotated (any such annotations will always be between @RULE and @TABLE, typically after any other documentation) but this is not the case with Perrier.rule, and, presumably, many of the other loop rules.
Of course, the various states' functions are only vaguely apparent from the patterns themselves. (i.e. certain states are loop signals, others are "reading heads" that travel along the data tapes, and most of the rest of the states constitute the data tape itself)
What the documentation I provided earlier seems to suggest is that Perrier may in fact be only one of a family of rules supporting Turing machines, so complete detailed description may not be as useful as you think.

Sorry for relatively late reply, but is there a way I could learn it in a nutshell or something? Some way that I at least know what the most important states are or something? :|

The best way to learn the operation of the rule would be to watch the Perrier rule in operation and play around with the sample patterns.
For such complex dynamics that's really all I can say.
