Okay! I'm not sure if other members in this forums would think the same, but at least for me: I'm pretty accustomed to Life evolution, so I feel more comfortable when I can see what pattern this is etc.

For the 3D version: Cool! So this is how it's like to see time going upwards. I think this is cooler for the general, but personally I'd like to see the normal life evolution in 2D just viewed in 3D, too!
The colors are nice overall for me. I like this one from your forums the most:

I really like the puffer train viewed in this way, the bizarre staircase that emerges. I think you do a good job portraying it artistically without going over the top, but from 1:11 (when the cubes become balls) until scene switch the camera path didn't add much for me.

The last bit where you're chasing the scene upwards is gorgeous, I'd love to see more of that for just random explosive soups. Maybe check the catagolue site for some soups that produce funky oscillators.

Have you tried with any of the breeders? I'm curious whether quadratic growth would be pretty or ugly with this style (apart from just generating an inverted pyramid, I feel like the internal structure, at least of the puffer that puffs glider guns, would be pretty. But it might just be monotonous and have so many cells that it's not worth the render time)

I'd second that. Zooming through a structure like that can be fun sometimes, when there's something new to be discovered. But a lot of what's down there in the static past is long simple columns from stabilized ash, and angled glider columns aren't all that much more interesting.

I was a little confused there, more than half thinking of the direction as downwards, because of the floating island/waterfall sequence that preceded it. It did look good! I wondered what it would look like if the angle were not as steep -- that segment was kind of brief, and the view never really caught up to the front end.

It's a nice effect to add new Life planes to the bottom of the stack, as the first 3D sequence did, and adding them at the top is different but also good.

To me the important part is that something should keep changing. Any Life pattern run for a finite length of time is really a static 3D object, and static objects aren't generally as interesting as moving ones, no matter how you play with camera angles. I'd actually much rather see an oscillator in 2D going through its cycles, than a boring static 3D object that just sits there and represents all the phases of the oscillator at once.

Keeping Things Moving

An idea that occurred to me was to combine the top-of-stack and bottom-of-stack motion, by removing planes from the bottom of a stack of (10? 100?) at the same rate as adding them to the top. Or maybe remove planes at half the speed that they're being added? Maybe color the top and bottom planes a different color from the rest of the cube sides, so that when the camera is pointing at the bottom or top, a moving Life configuration is recognizable. This would allow a running Life pattern to start out as a single plane, run for a while, bulk up into a 3D object, and then eventually shrink back down to a standard Life plane again.

There are lots of possible experiments that might be interesting to try. Have each plane be translated a fraction of a cell compared to the previous one, or even shrink or expand each new plane very slightly... or squash the older cubes so that each one is 7/8 the height of the newer ones, or apply a color gradient so that each Life plane in a stack is a slightly different color.

Or... well, sorry, thinking of new ideas is the easy part (so let me know any time more ideas are wanted). The painful part is the actual coding and rendering, so thanks for doing this experiment!

Funky spaceships might be an interesting option, too. I'd also really love to see a 3D flyover of the latest gun collection, or some subset of it.

I wrote some 2D flyover scripts a decade ago, for a much earlier version of Golly, with the idea of showing off some of the really impressively large collections of oscillators and spaceships that are available. Use + and - to change the speed of the flyover:

It would be fun to get something like this updated for the modern age -- zooming and panning through a large "zoo" of Life creatures, maybe with different colors or cell shapes, and with different camera angles instead of just a straight-down view. Maybe an occasional glimpse of the horizon... though it might be better if the Life plane were mapped onto a sphere, or more traditionally a torus, so that tiny faraway parts of a large menagerie would be conveniently hidden beyond the horizon.

This script shows off a tiny subset of Koenig's Object Database -- a couple hundred randomly chosen lines out of a total of several hundred thousand objects (last I checked). Let it run for a while... it only gets really interesting when you get past the first hundred period-2 oscillators -- those probably wouldn't be too interesting in 3D.

I know I'm not even scratching the surface of the possibilities with 3D GoL. In my experiments, I saw amazing fractal shapes, futuristic buildings and trees. There's a lot to do. But I want to render it with a good quality. And using cubes takes a lot of computer power. However, using simple point particles enables to go extremely further. I'll have to use that for big and long patterns.

Scorbie, I agree with you that this image is the best. I don't think it's just because it's still and I should do an animation with it.

biggiemac, I also agree about the camera movement when the cubes become spheres. Mostly when it really goes inside. About breeders, you can see this early version I made (before I found the good way to render it)

dvgrn, you have a lot of ideas and I'm definitely gonna check the collections you linked here.
About the blue waterfall, I was actually very disappointed with the result. The framing hides everything, there's a lot of straight columns, the stars are too blur when the camera turns down, the blue waterfall is completely clipped/burnt (in other words too strong and corrupting the lighting quality), the colors could be more interesting/less random and it ends right when it starts to be interesting. I'd have to prolong it but I need a better computer.

But don't expect video updates to come too soon, I've got a lot of other stuff to do and this takes ages to render.

Okay, I thought the 2d ones are more or less the same as LifeViewer... But now I see that both does its own job very well. LifeViewer is clear than aesthetic, your animation is pretty. I like the dark starry background. The orange 2D ones, though, are pretty much what you can see on LifeViewer here, I think.

After I saw your vimeo video... I really liked that Kok's Galaxy in 3D, rotating and making a well-like shape :)

I think these would be best suited as some sort of screensaver. Unfortunately it looks too slow to render on-the-fly...

I am enjoying your works. Keep the cheer!
