Ship Maker

The
ship maker wick you found, Nathaniel. It makes interesting things at the end! What exactly it makes depends on the length of the wick. It's quite neat, so here's what I figured out (with pictures!):
6 mod 8 cells ->
exhibit 4 - it went back and ate its own ships (also, a large spark at the top)!
7 mod 8 cells -> same as 47, which is the length you have on java (block and beehive on top, making 120 degree angle with wick).
0 mod 8 cells ->
exhibit 5.
1 mod 8 cells -> three boats and two blocks on top (not interesting enough for an exhibit).
2 mod 8 cells -> the second-neatest one. Makes just a single block at the end.
3 mod 8 cells -> made a lot of weird stuff (
exhibit 6)
4 mod 8 cells ->
exhibit 3 (block and beehive on top, but 90 degree angle with wick). Also available some steps in the evolution of this one: exhibits
1 and
2 (yes, I didn't think out what I was getting myself into when I started making these).
5 mod 8 cells -> the neatest one - everything but the ships dies out. It looks juts like a normal regular wick in this one!
Some of this should probably make it into the article, as these are produced as much as the eight blocks at the beginning.
[edit:] incidentally, as a consequence, it makes no ships at 54 cells despite that seemingly being above the minimum for acting as a wick.

Nice, I'll look into extending the article (or at least adding an image gallery with this stuff in it). I spent some time tinkering around and looking for other "maker" fuses, but I couldn't find 'em... really surprising for me is that there doesn't seem to be a simple "block maker" or "blinker maker" fuse.

I'm honestly more surprised that there is a hivemaker, since most of these things seem to be symmetric across the diagonal.
[edit:] also, removing the leftmost cell from that wick results in it making the blocks and then immediately eating them (with no remains except at the beginning and end), which is also kind of fun.

Nice! There really should be a symmetric one though, so let's see if we can find that
Maybe all of these (including shipmaker etc) could be combined into one wiki page, since we could keep making new ones until the cows come home.

Okay, I finally made what I wanted - a glider maker! Unfortunately it was much less awesome than
the Shootout! The fun begins around generation 200, so fast forward that far (also, the giant size is because the reaction is so pretty I wanted it to happen lots [although also because the first quarter and last sixth are wasted]).
PS: to get the glider maker, just do something about the right fork of the tail - adding a tail-tail like on the left one works, for example (as does shortening it to some lengths).

It is as efficient as the "Harvester" fuse. I call it a "Skewed Harvester".

I believe that these things can never make pulsars, because I think that everything they make has to have a power of two period. Which is odd, because the mess at the back of one of them looks much like any other mess, it's like the universe colludes to stop pulsars forming.

Hrm... I dunno, I see no reason why something like this couldn't produce
pre-pulsars and hence pulsars. Though I think it's something that's pretty hard to make a conjecture about considering how unnatural objects with non-power-of-two period are in Life.

Even if the period of the fuse is necessarily a power of two, it doesn't mean that the output has to also be a power of two.

The gliders are formed right behind the "head" of the burning fuse and begin to lag further behind until they are swallowed up
by debris that has not settled yet. It would be cool if the gliders were left alone to chase the "head".
