Totally periodic pattern

In
another thread dvgrn mentioned the existence of a pattern where every cell in the plane becomes eventually periodic (presumably with period >= 2). If such a pattern existed in practice then I guess I would have heard of it.
So here is my plan to make such a pattern. I found the following MWSS rake in the jslife collection. The rake is glider constructible and two of them touch every cell in the SW corner of the Life plane. So we would need a universal constructor that makes the rakes and then rebuilds itself somewhere down in the SE but rotated 90 degrees clockwise. The next iteration would touch every cell in the NW and so on and so on....
This is the first thing I thought of that even sounds half way practical so feel free to shout me down if I am making things way way too complicated.

I suppose you could make it totally aperiodic by building the next UC in such a way that it is slightly more tardy than the previous one, although I'm not 100% sure on how such a mechanism could be achieved.

Could anyone explain the term "Totally periodic" precisely?
EDIT: Period 1 doesn't count, right? Otherwise the spacefiller would have been one.

Wow! That's brilliant, thanks!
EDIT: Hang on, it doesn't seem quite like what I was trying to build. In that pattern every cell in the universe gets touched but all cells are eventually of period 1, I think. In fact I think that every cell in that pattern is only alive for a finite number of generations.

Spacefillers produce agar of p2 (btw, are there known spacefillers that fill the space with an agar other than stripes?)
P1 is a still life. The simplest example of total "periodic" pattern with period 1 is the empty space.

Me too. Zebra stripes is a p2 agar. That's certain, that spacefillers also belong to patterns, in which every cell eventually becomes periodic (namely, p2).

Because the empty space (or any p1) is a cheat
(A trivial solution to the problem.)

Oh I should've read chris_c's first post carefully. Sorry.
Do you know "WHY" these patterns (on the wiki) are periodic/aperiodic?
And I'm pretty sure that the spacefiller fills the space with period 1.

Hang on. I'm not understanding this at all. The "Total Aperiodic" pattern is definitely brilliant but I really don't understand the "Total Periodic" pattern.
As far as I understand:
1. the block will move to the North East (very slowly) over time.
2. None of the bouncing gliders will get past the block.
3. That leaves a lot of empty streaks in the SW.
Am I missing something?

Yeah, that's the way I see it.
1. The only lives cells SW of the block are the two outer glider streams.
2. The block moves slowly but inexorably NE over time.
Consequence: every cell in the plane will eventually die and stay dead.
So are there any breeders that can build a P2 agar? I don't know of any myself.

If this is a "totally periodic" pattern, then aren't the spacefillers and nonfillers also a "totally periodic" pattern?
Oh, and I don't know any, and it would be a challenge to make a spacefiller with a periodic agar.

Yeah, I think I'll take out the total-periodic item from the did-you-knows, since it isn't really clear that total-periodic is particularly unique.
I seem to recall I originally checked in total-periodic.mc (only) to Golly's pattern collection, because it and total-aperiodic.mc seemed like a matched pair, but it seemed a little silly to include both, and it's easier to subtract a block than to add one. Here are the comments in the Golly pattern file:

So the only ways that total-periodic is interestingly different from a spacefiller or nonfiller are 1) the truly ridiculous number of ticks that it takes for (a certain subset of) cells to become periodic, and 2) the fact that removing just a couple of cells would convert total-periodic to total-aperiodic.
Looks like the empty streaks in the southwest could be filled by adding maybe half a dozen more rakes, and maybe moving the block a little, so that every cell would be ON at least once and then eventually OFF forever. A minor weakness of spacefillers and nonfillers is that a few cells near the center are never ON.

Off-topic: I have a question. This is from
one of Paul callahan's pattern catalog:
Venetian blinds
This is a finite version of the infinite p2 oscillator in which
rows alternate full, full, empty, empty, full, full, ... Two types
of edges are shown, one perpendicular to the rows and one at a 45
degree angle. (It's easy to prove that there's no p2 edge parallel
to the rows.) Also shown are 3 type of corners where the edges
meet. This partly answers a question of John Conway's: What's the
maximum average density of an infinite p2 pattern, and can it be
obtained as a limit of finite p2 patterns? This shows that 1/2 is
a lower bound. Hartmut Holzwart showed that 8/13 is an upper bound.

It is very likely that the asymptotic average density og any life pattern is less than or equal to 1/2-
The 8/13 is an easy upper bound for all periodic patterns. One can do a little better for p2, but I've not seen any proof, that the upper bound is 1/2. Neither have I seen any pattern with average density > 1/2.

Are there any good examples of small "nonfillers" that expand in all directions but leave empty space in the middle in Life?
If so, it could be an interesting project to modify the initial state so that all cells in the middle are alive at some point and then dead, in which case such a pattern would (I think) be the first pattern in Life in which all cells in the plane are eventually alive at least once and then dead forever.

It will be interesting to see whether a center can be devised that will turn on all cells at some point, then die off cleanly. There are certainly lots of options to try, but it's going to be hard to avoid interfering with the expanding nonfiller.
It might be worth using a later stage of the nonfiller, to have room for a larger central mechanism that expands and then dies. Any size central region can just be all ON, of course, as long as the margin can be arranged to spark and then die off harmlessly.

Before I saw your post, I came up with this strategy: 24 space rakes. Like the nonfiller, all the below pattern needs is something to fill the middle space which is completely alive at some point and then dead, which shouldn't be hard (maybe a solid block with the right style of edge.)
I am curious what the smallest such pattern is, though. I might try fiddling with the nonfiller. To rephrase in a more mathematical way for those interested, I'm looking for a finite pattern such that for any cell C in the infinite plane, there is a generation M at which C is alive and a generation N after which C is never alive again.

It doesn't meet the stipulation that every cell should die and remain dead after some number of generations.
