Extended life plus

Post by praosylen »

Hello again! I made a version of ExtendedLife where the extra states can be created and destroyed. Here it is:

Code: Select all

@RULE ExtendedLife+
@TABLE
n_states:7
neighborhood:Moore
symmetries:permute
var a={1,2,5}
var aa={a}
var ab={a}
var ac={a}
var ad={a}
var ae={a}
var af={a}
var ag={a}
var b={0,3,4,6}
var ba={b}
var bb={b}
var bc={b}
var bd={b}
var be={b}
var bf={b}
var bg={b}
var c={0,1,2,3,4,5,6}
var ca={c}
var cb={c}
var cc={c}
var cd={c}
var ce={c}
var cf={c}
var d={4,6}
var e={0,6}
e,a,aa,ab,b,ba,bb,bc,bd,1
1,c,b,ba,bb,bc,bd,be,bf,0
1,a,aa,ab,ac,c,ca,cb,cc,0
e,2,c,ca,cb,cc,cd,ce,cf,1
e,3,c,ca,cb,cc,cd,ce,cf,0
0,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,af,ag,6
6,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,af,ag,2
6,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,af,b,3
2,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,af,b,0
3,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,c,ca,0
6,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,b,0,5
5,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,c,ca,0
6,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,c,d,4
4,a,aa,ab,ac,ad,ae,c,ca,0
@COLORS
0 255 255 255
1 0 0 0
2 255 0 0
3 0 0 255
4 0 255 0
5 255 255 0
6 128 128 128
Incidentally, in this rule, a single state 2 cell is a 3000+ generation methuselah. However, so far this rule does not seem to be exploding.

I can see you've made quite an effort to avoid the "classic" ExtendedLife methuselahs, such as the ones below.

Code: Select all

x = 2, y = 1, rule = ExtendedLife+
BE!

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 2, rule = ExtendedLife+
B$3.E!
In ExtendedLife, the former has a lifespan of about 19.5 million generations. The latter has a lifespan > 10^8 generations.
Your rule replaces those with symmetric 2-cell exploders such as the one below, which mostly have a dynamic of growth around the edges of the pattern, with the center of the pattern filled mostly with state 1 junk, lone state 3 cells, and state 6 cells.

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 5, rule = ExtendedLife+
E4$B!

I take back that last remark. After watching some patterns quite easily evolving through 30,000 generations, I now believe that this rule is probably exploding in character, but still right on the edge.

Nice rule! Here's a 10-cell p500 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 3, rule = extendedlife-B36S23
.A4.A$A.A2BA.A$.A4.A!
3-cell pattern lasts 66742 generations:

Code: Select all

Edit: 4-cell precursor to a p114 gun:

domino components make good oscillators:
p9324 osc:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 19, rule = extendedlife-B36S23
2D3$2D3$2D3$2D7.2D3$2D3$2D3$2D!
3-cell p432:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 1, rule = extendedlife-B36S23
C5.B4.C!
p163 2-barrel gun:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 3, rule = extendedlife-B36S23
C$.2C6.B4.C$C!
p224 4-barrel gun:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 3, rule = extendedlife-B36S23
2.3F$B.C.F$2.3F!
2-cell mess makes replicator based growing spaceship around gen 20,000:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 1, rule = extendedlife-B36S23
B9.C!
It stabilizes at around half a million gen with a p8 osc in the center.

EDIT:
3-cell p1226 has a much longer period:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 1, rule = extendedlife-B36S23
C5.B5.C!
3-cell p1589:

Where did that phrase appear? It doesn't seem to be anywhere else in this thread. A pulse divider is a piece of circuitry that produces one output signal for every two input signals that it accepts. It can be used as an x2 period multiplier, but in general a pulse divider doesn't require period-N input -- the timing might be more irregular. (A period multiplier accepts period-N input and produces period-kN output, pretty much by definition.)

Here's an old and somewhat out-of-date reference to B3/S23 pulse dividers. Nowadays we have Guam's semi-Snark and various other P1 mechanisms available. No doubt there are ways to build similar mechanisms in these Extended Life rules.
