While messing around with the three-state random rule creator I found this rather interesting rule that strides the border between stable and exploding:

Code: Select all

Given a rectangle randomly filled at 50% density, the pattern will exhibit class 2 or 3 behavior, with class 2 being dominant over class 3. This mix creates a rule that is much tamer if carefully handled. Here is a sampler of patterns I found relatively quickly:

Code: Select all

No spaceships at the speed so far though.

EDIT 2: The rule for state 1 cells happens to be B2/S/C7 where C means 'convert' as in change to state 2. This means many engineered patterns for Seeds will work in this rule, including one of the c/2 ships.
