While experimenting with simple 4 states CA's based on 3 alternating rules I managed to find this rule that exhibit some interesting behavior when you allow the states to be combined:
(Save as scraps.table, all lowercase!)

Code: Select all

n_states:4
neighborhood:Moore

var a={0,1,2,3}

This rule has a naturally occuring c/1 period 15 knightship:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 7, rule = scraps
2.A$2.A2$A.3B$3.B$.3B$.B2.B!
In addition, it also has a glide-reflective orthogonal naturally occuring spaceship with speed c/57!

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 4, rule = scraps
5.A.A$6.3A$3.A2.2A$A.2A!
That c/57 ship can ram into the unnamed really common oscillators that this rule has and keep going:

Code: Select all

x = 164, y = 24, rule = scraps
.A3$A$3.A.A2$160.C.C$159.2C.2C2$161.C.C$3.A154.C.C$4.A$158.2C.2C$159.
C.C3$28.C.C$27.2C.2C2$29.C.C$26.C.C2$26.2C.2C$27.C.C!
It also turns out that that ship actually includes one of said oscillators and depends on the one it creates at some points.

This rule is B15/S12357 > B257/S0267 > B678/S0368, and any cell with neighbors that are not the same state or off is off in the next generation. So far the knightship is the only significant pattern that contains multiple on states, but there might be others.

EDIT: Actually, I have just found a new spaceship that uses multiple states in a given generation, being a 7c/24 orthogonal spaceship with period 24:

Code: Select all

x = 2, y = 18, rule = scraps
.C$2C$2C2$.A9$.A2$2C$2C$.C!
I had seen one half of the horizontal movement engine occur naturally, but I needed to pull it out and put two of them together to make it stable.

I'm now realizing this rule has more natural stuff than I first thought, including a little natural p3 knightship, and I had also forgotten about a p18 oscillator. Here's everything I've found so far in the two or three days since I found this rule:

Code: Select all

x = 83, y = 84, rule = scraps
6$46.A3$47.A12$67.A.A.A$66.7A$67.A.A.A$66.7A$67.A.A.A21$.C$2C8.A2.A$

A$.C14$5.A31.A$37.A2$6.A28.A.3B$9.B28.B$7.3B26.3B$7.B2.B25.B2.B!

I've found a bunch of ways to combine three of the four basic spaceships (unfortunately the c/57 one is too slow to do much, and is more fragile on the edges and back than the front in some cases), to generate spaceships with huge plumes of smoke behind them and clean puffers. I'm starting to feel like this rule is a sort of inverse to Seeds: it has a fair amount of potential for engineered patterns, but instead of almost everything that is not stabilized exploding, almost everything that is not stabilized dies. Anyways, here is an updated assortment:

Here's a mini extra collection, from left to right three related shuttle-type p54 oscillators, the failed replicator they are based off, and a natural but rare p18 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 204, y = 69, rule = scraps

First, thanks for picking up this project. I'm excited to see what people find.
Is there a specific format in which you'd like us to post the new ships? I have collected a non trivial number of spaceships in various rules over the last few years. I can go through them and put them in the format as the rest of the database, though it'll take me a little time. I'm guessing that if people find a new ship or two, they can just paste them to the forums in the usual way.
