Re: Life tag testing

Post by rowett »

I've been working on patterns that are larger than bounded grids and I think I may have found a bug in Golly.

The test patterns here behave differently in LifeViewer than Golly.

The first pattern is wider than the bounded box and if you look at the right-hand column after one generation I think LifeViewer is getting it right and Golly wrong.

The second pattern is taller than the bounded box and if you look at the bottom row after one generation, again I think LifeViewer is correct and Golly not.

Please will you confirm or otherwise? I've been staring at cells too long today...

Yup, that's a bug for sure. Golly is not cropping the pattern until after the first tick. If you don't try to stare at so many cells, maybe it will be clearer:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S23:P4,4
o3bo$4bo$4bo$o!
Probably works fine in Build 249, but running in Golly exposes its folly: Golly turns on a cell on the right edge at T=1.

(But are you removing the size checking in Build 249, or is that just a test change you aren't planning to release? 248 still complains about "Pattern larger than bounded grid".)

Build 249 should probably be a Release Candidate. Once you're happy with it please gently prod Nathaniel.

Next on the backlog are:
  • LTL (!)
  • [[ STARTFROM <generation> ]] and/or [[ LOOPTO <generation> ]] script commands (haven't yet decided if both are needed - thoughts?)
  • Precache / memoize reset points

That's an interesting question. It seems possible that only LOOPTO will be needed, but that it might not need a <generation> parameter. Instead it could be a label for a particular waypoint -- so maybe a more accurate name would be LOOPTOHERE or maybe REPEAT.

That could work even if waypoints don't gain the ability to jump instantly backwards in time -- as long as a first waypoint can be defined with T>0. But I'd certainly still like the option to jump backwards during a waypoint animation, or to move with controllable timing to a new X,Y location without the time having to increase.

Yes that was similar to my thinking. The existing LOOP command would reset to either T=0, or the generation defined by POIT (or whatever that gets renamed to when a non-specific-to-POIs capability is available). This saves a command but I guess there is a use case where you might want to start playback at T={something > 0} but then LOOP back to T=0.

Yes this part is being considered.

This part is harder. I might even have to design it first.

Come to think of it, the instant-jump option that you already have in POI World is good enough in a pinch.

It's okay if the time has to increase, let's say by one tick per jump, or N ticks between jumps if a longer delay is wanted at one stopping point than at others... because it's possible to set the rule to something like B/S012345678, and drop all the individual frames I want to show into one big pattern.

That would be serious creative misuse of LifeViewer, and it's all or nothing -- can't run in Life for a while, then start doing this frame-by-frame trick -- because you can't change rules in midstream.

Please don't take the per-waypoint rules idea as a feature request; there aren't many non-April-Fools use cases where that would be a useful thing to do. Maybe if you wanted to run the same pattern in ten different rules and show what happens each time, or some such.

... That could probably be done better and more generally by allowing a series of separate RLE chunks in series, with separate viewer config commands after each RLE chunk. Commands before the first RLE chunk would be lumped in with any commands after the first RLE chunk.

(That's not an official feature request either.)

Looks good! At least, I tried your test pages, and then patched Build 250 in to the latest knightship thread page which has both code and viewer tags. Nothing seemed to be broken. I might not manage to get through the full regression test suite for a while yet, but you never know.

I wondered if you might consider putting a copy of Build 250 at

Code: Select all

http://lazyslug.no-ip.biz/lifeview/plugin/js/release/lv-plugin.js
If Nathaniel can set up an automatic copy from that location whenever it changes (haven't asked yet) then rolling out new versions could happen automatically, and anything that goes wrong wouldn't be Nathaniel's fault... but rolling back to an earlier version could happen by the same mechanism.

I've copied build 250 to the new "release" folder. That would be great if it could be automated.

I guess the process would be:
  1. I put a release candidate in the usual location and post a message here
  2. You test it and if all goes well let me know here
  3. I copy the release candidate to the "release" folder
  4. Nathaniel's (yet to be built) auto-release magic copies it from the "release" folder to here and the Wiki

Yup, that's what I was thinking. I've sent a reminder and suggestion to Nathaniel. Didn't hear anything back from the last couple of requests, so the odds are he's pretty busy at the moment!

It's not a priority for me either. It should probably be marked as a Known Problem if it's not fixed before the next Golly release.

Looks very promising!

I'm probably just not using it right yet. Can't see how to stay on a frame for longer than the minimum length of time, and then still jump to the next frame without a flicker:

Code: Select all

x = 146, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
101.A19.2A17.A3.A$21.A19.2A18.2A17.3A17.4A16.4A21.A$3A18.2A17.A.A17.A
.2A18.2A19.A16.A.3A15.A4.A$2.A17.A.A19.A19.A18.2A20.A18.2A17.5A$.A
100.A!
#C [[ X -70 Y 0 Z 16 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X -70 Y 0 Z 16 "Metamorphosis, Frame 1" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X -50 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 2" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X -30 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 2" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X -10 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 4" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X 10 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 5" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X 30 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 6" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X 50 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 7" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 X 70 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 8" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 ]]
It definitely doesn't work so well when the "PAUSE 0" and "PAUSE 1" are exchanged:

Code: Select all

x = 146, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
101.A19.2A17.A3.A$21.A19.2A18.2A17.3A17.4A16.4A21.A$3A18.2A17.A.A17.A

100.A!
#C [[ X -70 Y 0 Z 16 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X -70 Y 0 Z 16 "Metamorphosis, Frame 1" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X -50 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 2" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X -30 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 2" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X -10 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 4" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X 10 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 5" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X 30 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 6" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X 50 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 7" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 1 X 70 Y 0 Z 16 "Frame 8" ]]
#C [[ PAUSE 0 ]]
That second trial is behaving exactly as I expected, with the waypoint label text staying up for a second instead of flashing on and disappearing. Obviously the "Pause 0" isn't doing any good here...

EDIT: Aha! Sorry, I'm a little slow sometimes. Now all that's left is the minor flicker I mentioned before:

Code: Select all

x = 146, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
101.A19.2A17.A3.A$21.A19.2A18.2A17.3A17.4A16.4A21.A$3A18.2A17.A.A17.A

Fixed in build 252.

Also note you don't need the #C comment prefix after the terminating ! in the RLE. Everything after ! is deemed to be comment automatically.

Plus for your animation you'll also need to add some History states as the pattern evolves...

Build 252 looks good! That might be everything I really need to finish my animations for the upcoming Gathering for Gardner -- I'll have to get building and find out. The jump-backwards-in-time trick would still be nice, or alternatively jump-to-new-pattern-with-different-rule... but I can definitely work with this. Many thanks!
rowett wrote:Also note you don't need the #C comment prefix after the terminating ! in the RLE. Everything after ! is deemed to be comment automatically.
Yup, I used to leave out the #Cs for that reason. Something or other came up fairly early on -- something Andrew mentioned, maybe about how Golly processes comments? -- that made me think it was a good idea to always include the #C "for safety's sake". Can move the comments to the top of the pattern this way, for example. Now I can't find the specific reference, but it was back there somewhere.
rowett wrote:Plus for your animation you'll also need to add some History states as the pattern evolves...
Well, yes, but this isn't the actual April Fool's pattern I have in mind. I'll save all the careful detail work for the Sir Robin synthesis, or whatever I end up deciding on.

Re: Life tag testing

Post by dvgrn »

I ran into some strange timing behavior in Build 250, while putting together the Sir Robin synthesis yesterday morning. Had to get finished with the posting and start traveling home from our Easter family visit, so I didn't get a bug report done. Here's at least a first attempt.

On my system, on the first preview, the animation below ran just as I expected, except that the GPS setting seems to get applied to the interval between waypoints just previous to the interval I intended for it to apply to.

On the second preview, the first couple of times around the loop, this synthesis ran strangely fast between about T=120 and T=1200, skipping almost all of the frames. Then it settled down and went back to running just as expected, with the same caveat as above.

On the third preview, LifeViewer settled down to predictability after just one superspeed run through the animation.

On the fourth and fifth previews, the timing seemed fine -- LifeViewer never went to superspeed at all.

So I have no idea what will happen when I post this. With any luck some similar behavior will show up, maybe after a few refreshes?
