ternary means a number of things:
  • balanced ternary
  • normal ternary (aka trinary)
  • weird ternary (digits 0 1 and 3)
  • bijective ternary (digits 1 2 and 3)
but trinary just means normal ternary (also i wrote this entire post in one line. quote and check it out)

There're only a few rules that directly supports any N-nary. Making computers not using binary is hard.
the first computers were trinary, and they had huge advantages

Here is an OMOSMOS where the SMOSes go through a few full cycles before colliding, and in each SMOS the Ses go through a full cycle before colliding:

Are there any rules that support an infinite tier of SMOS? For instance, having a SMOS, SMOSSMOS, SMOSSMOSSMOS, SMOSSMOSSMOSSMOS and beyond?

Find (or most likely engineer) a cellular automaton, where it is possible to construct a zero-encoded-by-zero-population unit cell for the same cellular automaton, with the property that at some generation the unit cell entirely consists of a nonnegative integer number of currently-noninteracting gliders (regardless of the emulated cellstate).

Make a glider out of such unit cells, have a SMOS.
Make a glider out of unit cells made out of gliders made out of unit cells, have a SMOSMOS.
Make a unit cell out of those SMOSMOSes, make a glider out of those unit cells, have a SMOSMOSMOS.
Make a mistake somewhere, have a headache trying to locate the bug.

Even through soups are uncountable in reality, I think soups should be countable in CAs, since they're not liquids.
It is definitely possible to count soups, and the Catagolue does that (among other things):

How many SKOPs in life are not actually the SKOP for the lowest maximum population for their period?

For example, while Pentadecathalon is the SKOP for minimum population at period 15, it is not the SKOP for smallest maximum population achieved by a p15 oscillator since Caterer on Fumarole peaks at 39 rather than 40.

Code: Select all

x = 55, y = 45, rule = B3/S23

$21b2o16b8o$12b5o4b2o17b6o$11bo2b2o25b4o$11b2o2bo!
EDIT: fun thing is that Pentadecathalon is actually the maximum population SKOP in Eightlife since the inhibitory sparks prevent eight cells from being born, having max population 32

Code: Select all

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

Infinitely many, to both questions. High-period glider loop oscillators that are SKOPs have bounded population and unbounded period.
Whoops. Meant greater than.
