That is why this is not a trivial exercise. Here are a few sparks that can accomplish this:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
o2bo8bo2bo8bo2bo$4o8b4o8b4o2$2b2o10b2o10b2o$2b2o10b2o10b2o2$2b2ob2o7b

I wonder if it can be used in a orthogonal signal; its simplicity would ease the creation of elbows and OMNIPERIODICITY CONFIRMED
This reaction is trivial and has been known for ages. How can this be used for a signal? Without any more details, this assertion is meaningless. Sure, it is simple, but how is it useful? Unless you can find a way to obtain an object in that state in the first place, it isn't practical.

Also, omniperiodicity has been a Holy Grail of life for many decades. If you have a claim to such an elusive result, you really must provide more proof than a single result already known for decades. Also, there is no need to use larger fonts for emphasis. If a result is important, the readers will get that importance from the contents themselves, rather than their presentation.
Gustavo6046 wrote:Sorry for posting this much, I found a very fast diagonal signal triggered by only two gliders:
Gliders hitting (and destroying) a long barber-pole has long been known. This is not a signal unless you can restore the barber-pole behind the signal. It is much easier to introduce a bull into a china shop than it is to recreate all the original china.
Gustavo6046 wrote:I also found a nice way to elongate boats:
Again, this has long been known. Arbitarily lengthening boats is, in fact, done by adding dominos successively. In this particular example, this might be interesting (if not useful) if the domino chain were part of a fuse terminated at both ends by some kind of stable terminator, and you found a way to turn one terminator into a boat-like object, that would then grow the boat into a crystal all the way up the domino chain.
Gustavo6046 wrote:And what to say about this?
In most fields, when you are crafting something (whether it be furniture, chemicals, or Life patterns), it is usually a good idea to have reusable tools and catalysts that may be expensive, but consumable raw materials that are cheap. In this case, however, you have reversed this. Your reusable catalyst (a block) is cheap and easy to make, while your consumable object (a long ship) is not.
Gustavo6046 wrote:I also found a nice HWSS collision that generates R:
All collisions of gliders and the basic spaceships into small objects had already been done many decades ago, so no such result will be new. Unless it has some obvious newly-discovered application (e.g. the glider half-bakery collision that results in an offset half-bakery and a glider, which has recently been used to create large spaceships), it probably isn't interesting.
Gustavo6046 wrote:And to end today's circus, a nice three-glider synth of wing:
This is just two gliders into an eater (which could also be formed in other ways). Again, all collisions of a single glider into a single object have been done decades ago.

Sometimes it is called reburnable fuse.
Typically 'signal' is used when 'the exact same thing' is restored to its original position and phase, whereas 'reburnable fuse' allows for its output to be translated and/or rephased. So the 17c/45 pi-crawler is a reburnable fuse rather than a signal.

The lightspeed beehive pulse in the telegraph is a reburnable fuse (rather than a signal), whereas 10 copies of this reaction suitably composed in succession does yield a signal -- which is precisely why the telegraph sends so many pulses.

I won't argue most of the things that already exist. For the HWSS-on-long-ship reaction, I would make an G-to-H, to an H-to-2H, and connect H-to-Gs that would reconstruct the long ship. Not forgetting it would have at least one glider released. :)
Oh... You are still getting pissed off... because of a signature? 8)
EDIT: Is this reaction already well known? And if not, can it be SOMEHOW made into a signal? Sparks from another of these could trigger similiar state in another tub or beehive or whatever. Then something would restore its beehive/tub/whatever form. If not, then I guess it's useless.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
o$bo$o2bo$obo$bo!
EDIT 2: It could be the restorer here:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
o$bo$o2bob2o$obo2b2o$bo!
EDIT 3: This is a stable form:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 6, rule = B3/S23
o$3o$3bo$2bo2bob2o$2bobo2b2o$3bo!
EDIT 4: It will be easier to make a beehive-in-table from the block than a boat-in-table because similiar reaction could trigger the block (making the "broken loaf thingie" with tail) and then be destroyed by another glider. Any synthesis is very welcomed as long as it don't affect the block until the "broken-loaf-thingie"-with-tail is formed.

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
o$3o$3bo$2bo2bob2ob2o$2bobo2b2obo$3bo6bo$10b2o!
EDIT 5: My plan was:
- Synthesis the loaf;
- Synthesis its tail;
- Glider destruct one single bit off it;
But I was surprised with THIS synthesis that came to appear when trying to do STEP 1:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
7bo4b2o$7b2o3bobo$6bobo3bo3$3o$2bo$bo!

There are many pre-honeyfarm reactions, and yes, I'd say they're well-known. And yes, they can sometimes be made into signals... but not very well yet.
Gustavo6046 wrote:Sparks from another of these could trigger similiar state in another tub or beehive or whatever. Then something would restore its beehive/tub/whatever form. If not, then I guess it's useless.
Unfortunately I think you can safely assume that your guess is right.

If you really want to find new B3/S23 signal circuitry, it would make a lot more sense if you invested a few hours researching your ideas before posting them. When you don't spend the time to think first, you keep making the same elementary mistakes. This is a big part of why your posts still are not welcome on other conwaylife.com forum threads.

• First, find a small conduit that can create your pre-honeyfarm from a known input, like a glider or Herschel.
• Second, find another small conduit that can connect to that and produce a known output.
• Third, test it to make sure the reaction can be repeated -- can another signal really follow the first one?
• Fourth, please post your combination of conduits, because that will be something really interesting!
Gustavo6046 wrote:But I was surprised with THIS synthesis that came to appear when trying to do STEP 1...
Have a quick look at "paperclip" in the LifeWiki, or in in Mark Niemiec's synthesis database. It's always kind of surprising to accidentally run into a rare object, but it would be better not to post old things as if they might be new.

Gustavo6046 wrote:... can this be somehow made into a Heisenburp (or almost-Heisenburp)?
Hmm, not really, I don't think. The closest to a Heisenburp might be the glider headed northwest: a new glider ends up on a lane just one away from the original -- but it's clearly been moved over and delayed.

"Heisenburp" is just a play on words for Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. In the real world you can't do a measurement without affecting the thing you're measuring somehow. But in B3/S23, a glider or spaceship can affect a reaction without being affected in return -- it just stays on the same lane with the same timing. Offhand I don't see a way to do that here.

It's an interesting little reaction, though. I guess you could think of it as a double glider reflector. If the NW-traveling glider is present, both gliders will be reflected, but otherwise they'll just keep going straight ahead.

Oh good.
I also found an glider inserter (recipe):

Code: Select all

x = 47, y = 45, rule = LifeHistory
14.C$5.C8.C.C$6.2C6.2C$5.2C13.C.C$20.2C$21.C4$15.C$14.2C$14.C.C2$3C$
2.C$.C12$33.2C$33.C.C$33.C13$44.3C$44.C$45.C!
I found my very first transparent catalyst !!! (unfortunately quite useless) Check for the blinker in the reaction and how it SURVIVES:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 17, rule = LifeHistory
8.C$9.C$7.3C9.C$18.2C$18.C.C7$15.C$14.2C$3C11.C.C$2.C20.C6.C.C$.C22.
2C4.2C$23.2C6.C!
Btw I am searcing for a G+block=G reaction were the output G is rotated 90 degrees to finish easily another Recipe.

The blinker catalyst is interesting, but it actually rephases the blinker, so it's not technically transparent. But I think it's still interesting, and I would consider it transparent.

So, I merged here an thread I made accidentally.
I made an GUI for WinBellman, and it works by a batch script which is ran in Windows. It will prompt some questions, support Bellman and mkstill, then it will exit. Copy to Notepad, then save in the WinBellman folder as "BellmanGUI.bat". removing the .txt extension from the end if it is present.
Later on I will make a Python GUI application instead (it will be batteries included. which mean it will include Python 2.7 and EasyGUI).

Code: Select all

@echo off
@echo off
title WinBellmanGUI

echo ___________
echo 0 BELLMAN 0  GUI v1.1

echo .
echo Welcome to Bellman!

No, the blinkers in the p47 are transparent, but in a way a non-rephased transparent blinker is "more transparent" than a rephased blinker.

I consider transparent to mean "affected but then restored, completely unaffected". So a blinker rephaser is in a way transparent, but for me it's "less transparent" than a normal transparent blinker.

It would be useful to have an ptbsearch GUI, even if it have to be in Python. (like, not Golly, but rather Python "batteries-included")

It seems that whether or not phase-preserving blinkers is more transparent than phase-changing ones would be a little controversial, but I feel that they don't look too different. I (and hopefully others?) would think that the in the latter case, the blinker is recovered in its "exact" phase after an "odd" number of generations. Also both 'even' blinkers and 'odd' blinkers works only half the time, so they look almost equal to me. Still, I think the word 'transparent' is not defined formally to periodic catalysts.

I'm not sure what you mean by this... But just in case you wanted something like the "Bellman GUI" thing you made in the scripts thread, I think you can make it for yourself. If ptbsearch is hard for you, you can always check my long long intro to ptbsearch.... OR you can read the readme files that comes with ptbsearch. (You can have a quick glance at the syntax)

So I am already coding the ptbsearch GUI. Anyone is waiting it's release?
It will support:
- Max generation for the catalysts to react;
- Num of catalysts;
- Minimal generation for the catalysts to react;
- Num of Transparent catalysts;
- Auto survive.

I forgot to point out that a GUI is a 'graphic user interface', which (whoo, surprisingly) makes use of graphic elements, like WLS/JLS/Golly etc, in which you can actually 'click' cells to manipulate them. Yours would be a Text-based user interface or TUI. (I'm not perfectly sure; correct me if I'm wrong.)

I think your UI would be easier for people who aren't accustomed at typing arguments at the command line. Although I'd have to say that once you get used to it, typing commands in the command line (or writing and executing a shell script yourself) is probably as easy as the UI and gives more flexibility.

EDIT: After reading Gustavo's following post, I guess that would be a GUI, then. BTW, can you make the program so that the user doesn't have to install easyGUI?

I tried to make a GUI for Bellman in Python first. It was a complete sucess. Moving on to ptbsearch.
But before that:
Is there a way of removing the tail of a boat with just gliders? I only found this four-glider way which can surely be optimized:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 8, rule = LifeHistory
2.A$A.A$.2A$7.A$3.2A.A.A$3.2A.2A.A$9.A$9.2A!

It's possible to remove tail tail from a boat-with-tail using only two gliders, without moving the boat. I'll let you try and find some way to remove the tail without ever moving the boat (though I'll accept up to four gliders in an answer)

Hint: Try to get the reaction produced away from the boat.
