Blinkerspawn and I have been working on some results derived from the above in the discord, and have determined that the p6 and 8 agars are both embeddings of stripe oscillators into the form of phoenix agars. (specifically, they're a simple background pattern XORed with the specified stripe patten). So any wolfram rule 18 (which describes the behavior of those stripes) spatially periodic even-length oscillator in which all on cells have equal spatial parity (that is, the distance between any pair of on cells is even) can be converted into a cgol phoenix agar of the same period. Oscillators of this form for periods 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 24, 28, 30, 62, 124, 126, 1022 have been found via brute force search.
The question now is if there exist such r18 oscillators of all even periods, and if so how to construct them.
There do exist r18 oscillators with all live cells of the same spatial parity of all even periods, and as such there exist phoenix agars of all even periods.
(On discord:
https://discord.com/channels/3579222555 ... 2070934702)
I have the proof as a pdf, but I can't attach a pdf here, so attaching the LaTeX source as a txt file.
This makes the status of phoenix oscillators as far as I know:
Finite, period 2: examples known
Finite, periods other than 2: Proven impossible by apg with earlier partial results by David Silver and myself.
Infinite, even periods: all exist, by this result.
Infinite, period 3, 5, or 7: Proven impossible by me using SAT solvers
Infinite, odd period >7: Believed not to exist but not proven.

You can get around this by posting a .zip archive containing the pdf.
The proof is quite interesting. Is the result that rule 90 has agars of all periods found in earlier litterature?

Probably, but I didn't find it in a few of the obvious places, or else I would've just cited them for it.

Probably, but I didn't find it in a few of the obvious places, or else I would've just cited them for it.
The first such proof was apparently by Mark A. Shereshevsky and Valentin S. Afraimovich in 1992. The full citation is
Code: Select all
Mark A. Shereshevsky and Valentin S. Afraimovich, Bipermutative cellular automata are topologically conjugate to the one-sided Bernoulli shift, Random & Computational Dynamics 1 (1992), 91-98.
but I wasn't able to find a copy online when I looked a few months ago.
The result was also proved independently by Masakazu Nasu in 1995, and I have attached a .zip archive containing a DjVu file of the book with the proof (specifically, Proposition 3.14 on page 51). If you read it, you might wonder how it relates to Rule 90. It turns out that Rule 90 is a bipermutive block map of (1,1) type on a full shift space over an alphabet of two symbols, say {0,1}. Thus by Proposition 3.14, Rule 90 is conjugate to the one sided double-shift (ordinary shift applied twice) on an alphabet on two symbols. We can then make a sequence of 0s and 1s such that it is periodic with the desired period under the double-shift map, and these correspond to infinite patterns that are periodic with the desired period in Rule 90. This is explained more clearly in
Jeremias Epperlein's dissertation, but the link is unfortunately not working at the moment.
The above proof actually essentially boils down to
this much more readable proof of omniperidicity in rule 150 (which works just as well for rule 90) that I independently discovered a few months ago. This same idea was also
implicitly used by pzq_alex about 4 years ago to construct oscillators and spaceships in certain rules that emulate Rule 90. So the fact that Rule 90 is omniperiodic has been independently proven several times.

Hi! I'm new to the forums, although I've been experimenting with Conway's Game of Life for years. Lately I tried to make a period 19 oscillator so I started experimenting with traffic light hasslers and I think I've come close to finding a p19 traffic-light hassler.

I highly suggest using a PC (or at least a laptop) if you have one for GoL.
As for "I don't know how to use them", please reach out to my PM's and I'll teach you. (or Discord if you have it)

Also, this p11 pi hassler from P1GG's extroduction collection is too cool not to repost and let y'all see it again, if you haven't already. I'll just let his words speak for themselves:
Complete pi hassler, me, 3/14/26
Remember, the p11 thumb has a minimized stator which can fit when the standard version can't (2-cell reduction below)

I've been trying to build a p11 pipsquirter based on the catalyst used in several
Lifewiki pipsquirters.
I first tried adapting the known p10 and p14 pipsquirters, but I wasn't able to find a compatible p11 signal source. After searching several routes, the most promising lead seems to be activating the catalyst with this traffic-light-predecessor reaction instead of a 2c/3 signal.
Code: Select all
x = 18, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

Some reactions I've already investigated:
- p11 signal injectors
- p11 billiard-table configurations
- period multipliers
- phase-shifting reactions
- Diamondback phases
- pipsquirter catalyst activations (traffic light, phi spark, beehive)
- traffic-light-predecessor reactions
I haven't been able to turn any of them into a p11 pipsquirter yet. Is this a known obstacle?
