What I am referring to is that single citation, which is no longer directly listed under "==references==" but is now linked there from the gallery.

<ref>{{LinkForumThread|format=ref|f=2|t=1437|p=145447|title=Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread|author=David Raucci|date=May 11, 2022}}</ref>
Looks like that makes the situation more clear. Are you referring to the choice between putting "in-text references" in the wikitext directly where they are used, versus collecting references at the end of the wikitext and merely linking to them through syntax like <ref name="post142857" />?

The latter (linking through syntax like <ref name="post142857" /> and defining the references at the end) is preferable, collecting references at the end is better because it reduces clutter visible for wiki editors. It doesn't directly affect the visible content, but of course it can affect the visible content indirectly by making things harder for editors.

That one reference is definitely a good example of a format that has been showing up more often just recently -- that I didn't know was even possible until sometime last year.

I can see how it could be described as "dense". In some ways, once people get used to it, that could be an advantage. Let's see what people think about it if I lay it out as a clear example here.

The current form of that particular reference example is this:
{This is the sentence being footnoted.}<ref>{{LinkForumThread|format=ref|f=2|t=1437|p=145447|title=Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread|author=David Raucci|date=May 11, 2022}}</ref>
...
==References==
<references />
-- where the "f=" and "t=" parameters are optional, in the sense that the link will work just fine without them. Notice that the post number only has to be added in one place (green).

This is a very easy reference format to copy from another article, and adjust to create a new reference -- especially for an article that currently does not have a References section yet. Just copy and paste some other dense-format reference, fix the post number, the title, the author, and the date, and add "==References=={newline}<references />" as the last section of the article.

Here's what would have to be added to create the same reference in the old "non-dense" format. This is the way references always used to be laid out in LifeWiki articles, and it never occurred to me to question whether there was a less convoluted option:
{This is the sentence being footnoted.}<ref name="post145447" />
...
== References ==
<references>
<ref name="post145447">{{LinkForumThread
|format = ref
|title =Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread
|p = 145447
|author = David Raucci
|date = May 11, 2022
}}</ref>
</references>
It's a whole lot easier to mess up this format and get big red ugly citation errors in your article previews. This is partly because of the nested <references> and <ref> tags having to be done correctly, but mostly because the post number has to be in agreement in three places (red).

I'm currently in favor of allowing the "dense reference" format as a standard format, and possibly even recommending it as a preferred format -- simply because it makes it significantly more likely that new editors will be able to easily learn how to add references based on a very simple and obvious template, without being put off by weird errors involving name agreement.

Having an error message is better than leaving it hidden. The error messages are clearly visible and tell the identifier, so it is possible to search through the wikitext for that identifier and find and fix the problem.

Collecting references near the end of the wikitext is better, because it is much more predictable when there are other kinds of markup on the page. It doesn't matter whether you use a reference just once or twice or several times. It doesn't matter whether you use a reference from a paragraph in plain text, or from a viewer caption, or from some table. This definitely should be the preferred recommended choice.

"In-text" formatting becomes clutter when used inside other markup. "In-text" formatting also causes errors when the same reference is used several times, and needs to be defined only once. One can get away with an "in-text" definition in those special cases when there is only one use and no surrounding markup (no tables, no viewer caption, etc.)

Exactly! It's always possible for experienced LifeWiki editors to convert a reference to the expanded format, as soon as the dense format becomes any kind of a problem.

It just seems like a good idea to make it easy for people to find clear documented examples of the dense "in-text" format, because it's significantly easier for less experienced LifeWiki editors to quickly add a reference in that format, skipping the unnecessarily complex named-reference syntax.

Pretty much we should take advantage of any way that we can encourage more references to get added right away, in any format. It's a lot better if a dense-format reference is there, compared to no reference at all; it's much harder to come back to an article months later and try to figure out what post number should have been referenced for an old edit.

It is problematic to encourage "in-text" format, because that would mislead new inexperienced editors into thinking that separating references from text is somehow problematic.

"In-text" format exists, it is supported, it can be used, but there are better solutions.

In general, separating references from text is a better choice. It makes the wikitext clearer. A syntax such as

Code: Select all

<ref name="post142857" />
is fairly easy to interpret as referring to a specific forum post. The definition can be located near the end of the wikitext,

Code: Select all

<references>
<ref name="post142857"> (... the footnote goes here ...)</ref>
</references>
It is a useful feature and a good convention. It can be documented, to make it even easier to understand than it already is.

Whether or not it is always necessary to convert existing "in-text" references to separate references from text is an open question. But separating references from text is an objective improvement. It would definitely make things worse to convert in the other direction.

Right. Nobody is suggesting converting anything from expanded format to "inline" format.

Yes, it should be missing, because unexplained soups don't contribute anything to knowledge or understanding and don't make any kind of encyclopedic information. The puffer shown later in the page already tells more than any soup would tell by itself.
I disagree with the claim that it should be missing and especially disagree with the claim that it "don't contribute anything to knowledge or understanding" because it definitely does convey knowledge and understanding. The soups is a really helpful visualization for the behavior of a rule for anyone reviewing the page, especially for newcomers or just general site users, which is not always apparent from select patterns at the bottom. Furthermore, I would say that patterns at the bottom are downright misleading, since they give the impression that the rule is full of those items when in actuality the rule is not full of those things.

That should be done by adding actual noteworthy patterns.

Soups are pseudorandom. Until and unless there is a clear human-readable explanation of why exactly a given soup is notable enough to be added to the page, the soup by itself doesn't add any knowledge or understanding.

It is similar to people posting random-looking patterns with little or no explanations on the forums, only worse. The forum rules already ask people to describe posted patterns to clarify in what way they are considered interesting.

The wiki is written for readers and the requirements are stricter.

As far as I can tell, the descriptions supplied for the patterns don't make any such claim.

Those soups are noteworthy patterns, I am not sure why you are arguing against that. Soups are really useful tools for observation of the natural behaviors of CA and are also real tools used to find notable patterns in life and other rules. Soups have been standard on all of the wiki pages for the longest time.
confocaloid wrote: April 4th, 2025, 10:30 am The wiki is written for readers and the requirements are stricter.
The presence of soups on the pages are for the readers to use, they aren't put on every CA page just to take up space. I personally find it fun to mess around with soups for rules even if I know I won't find anything interesting.

I am not talking about pattern descriptions.

By "misleading", I mean that showing a whole ton of cool patterns but not explicitly showing that these patterns are not all there is to a rule is misleading. Obviously it is impractical to list that "So-and-so rule's natural behavior is quite chaotic/not chaotic and most ash is made of Xs, Yss, and escaping Zs" on every CA page on the wiki, and often it is better to "Show" instead of "Tell" that the behavior of rule W settles into X, Y, and escaping Zs just to see that the big oscillator A mentioned below actually doesn't show up all that often.

Because they aren't noteworthy. A reader can easily generate lots and lots of unremarkable soups for themselves.

Until and unless there is a clear written explanation of how exactly a given soup is noteworthy, it isn't, and it doesn't contribute anything.

See LW:NB
I think you're missing my point entirely. It's not about any given soup being noteworthy or not (spoilers: they're not), but it's about any given soup's specific evolution in any given rule, serving as a depiction of the rule's behavior to the reader. I also thought all of the soups were supposed to be generated different each time the page is opened or refreshed, so it's never the same soup twice.

Long story short, the soup needs to be added back, end of story.

EDIT: My point exactly. That's notable.

Yes, it should be missing, because unexplained soups don't contribute anything to knowledge or understanding and don't make any kind of encyclopedic information. The puffer shown later in the page ( https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?titl ... 6#Patterns ) already tells more than any soup would tell by itself.

Also your post is essentially offtopic here (about the wiki, rather than about the cellular automaton).
A pseudorandom soup is not useless. It provides the reader valuable information about the dynamics of the rule and common objects in the rule, which the puffer does not.

If you believe that to be "misleading", then adding an entirely pseudorandom soup doesn't solve that problem in any way. It just adds a new problem (arbitrary/pseudorandom patterns are a distraction that doesn't add any encyclopedic information).

If you believe the page is incomplete in some specific way, then that can be improved by making the page more complete, supplying the missing (relevant, notable) knowledge in a clear human-readable way.

If you don't explain a pattern, it doesn't explain itself.
It is literally stated below each soup on each OCA page that the pattern in the infobox is a "LifeViewer-generated pseudorandom soup". That is an example of sufficient "telling", and if people are unclear about what that means, they can put any of those words (or the whole phrase) into the immediately adjacent search bar to find out what they mean.

I also apologize if it wasn't clear that I meant pages should aim to "show and tell", but should always start with showing, with text being more secondary. The random soup is a means by which arguably the most notable aspect of any rule can be shown, namely it's evolution over time given the conditions of birth and survival (fulfilling LW:NB). Starting from a randomized start point of equivalent randomness to the soups already in LV allows for the viewer to see not only how the rulestring is implemented, but also how the overall complex interactions between birthing, surviving, and dying cells progress over time in the rule in question.

Text is primary. Tell what is the topic of the article, why it is considered notable, what is known about it.
(Well-written text would work even without any pictures/images/viewers. You could explain a topic merely by writing about it in a clear, readable way.
In contrast, pictures/images/viewers by themselves wouldn't explain the topic.)

Also, "starting from a randomized start point of equivalent randomness to the soups already in LV" doesn't, in fact, allow "for the viewer to see [...] how the rulestring is implemented".
Looking how a soup evolves doesn't tell what are the rules followed by the cells.

The most important questions about a given CA are
  • How this CA is defined?
    A soup doesn't answer this question. The question might be answered by a "rulestring", and/or by an accurate precise readable definition written in plain English (which is often possible for notable cellular automata).
  • Where this CA comes from? Who, when, how investigated it?
    A soup doesn't answer these questions.
  • Why this CA is considered notable (LW:NB)? There are way too many cellular automata to investigate or document them all.
    An autogenerated soup doesn't answer the question (especially without any explanations of why show this particular soup rather than any other soup).
  • What sort of a CA it is? Is it interesting due to circuitry, or due to existence of small spaceships/common evolutionary sequences, or it is engineered for a single specific purpose?
    An autogenerated soup doesn't answer the question.
Only later, when such questions are answered, in some cases (but not always) it might be useful to provide a fixed soup (always the same for all readers and the same on every page load), along with a human-readable explanation that would describe evolution of this particular soup in this particular CA.

Tell what is interesting. Don't expect a reader to just magically figure it out. Describe the noteworthy/important reactions, interactions, objects appearing in the final pattern, and so on.

For those CA that are notable due to circuitry/engineered technology, or for those CA that are engineered/searched for a single purpose, soups don't make much sense to begin with.

While I do not agree with your assertation that the wiki is supposed to tell rather than show, it seems we are at an impasse which neither of us can resolve, and neither I nor my computer's damaged keyboard that increasingly fails to let me type a, s, d or f without great struggle (thank goodness CTRL, C, and V still work) can continue this discussion today.

I will end with this undisputable fact: it is far more customary to include randomly generated soup patterns in the infoboxes on the Wiki pages of Cellular Automota to the point where it seems the absence of one on Pseudolife's page is extremely abnormal and it would just be easier to add a random generated soup than to go through and remove them from all other CA pages.

If you wish to continue to challenge the status quo on the matter, I am not the one in charge of that decision or who you should be talking to. I would suggest talking to whoever came up with the original format for the CA pages or getting major consensus from others on the forums, but I personally will not be spending more of my time towards this matter as I have made my viewpoint clear.

There are limits to how much "decoding effort" can be expected from LifeWiki readers. A broken keyboard doesn't change much about that.
The wiki needs to be readable and useful to its readers, which involves telling what is known about notable Life/CA-related topics, what is the current understanding of Life/CA-related concepts, and so on.

I think there's little debate that showing (notable, relevant) patterns can be helpful.
It's just that one cannot get away solely by showing patterns without any explanations.
Especially one cannot get away by adding lots of patterns while ignoring notability, and without telling what might be interesting about those particular patterns.
Human-readable, accurate explanations are necessary.
WhiteHawk wrote: April 4th, 2025, 3:37 pm [...] it is far more customary to include randomly generated soup patterns in the infoboxes [...]
Which just means that the wiki is imperfect, and it can be improved. Common doesn't mean helpful.

A soup by itself doesn't magically communicate what is noteworthy about a given CA. Without such explanations, soups become misleading.

There is the assumption that showing a soup makes any sense at all. That assumption is unfounded. Soup searching is far from being the only way for a cellular automaton to become notable. There can be notable engineering/interactions/evolutionary sequences in a CA where most soups explode in a "boring" way. There can be notable engineering/interactions/evolutionary sequences in a CA where most soups very quicky die out or settle into sparse ash.

Hmm...That wiki says:
This site uses the CC BY-SA 4.0 license agreement as the content authorization agreement.
...
Text with other 'copyright statuses' cannot be placed on this site, especially including:
(...)
GFNL(v1.3?)[Note 1] and GPL
...
[Note 1]:This website does not comply with Article 11 of the GNU Free Documentation License 1.3 (GFDL 1.3) regarding the requirement to sublicense using CC BY-SA 3.0 or later versions;[...]
But I don’t know that if I can put the text with GFNL 1.2 .

Sure! The general pattern is that people can edit their own user page and any subpages they may create.

Anyone can also edit anyone else's user pages where permission has been specifically given -- like if someone is asking for help in maintaining a list or an article-in-progress that is intended to eventually move to the main namespace.

Does anyone know know what was used to make images like File:563p7.png?
Why is LifeWiki:General disclaimer empty, even though it is linked to on the bottom of every page?

What should be done when an updated LifeViewer Window pattern works in a different rulespace than the original pattern?

e.g. all three p27 glider guns work in different rulespaces. Which one deserves mention in the Rule tab in the Window? Should they all be acknowledged? Should any?
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

Are there edit that can be automated with a bot on LifeWiki? Maybe this? Category:Pages_with_broken_file_links
Why are there pages in Category:Pages needing cleanup even though there is no {{cleanup}} template on them?
