Can anyone make a breeder using this?

See https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Ants#Quadfuse. I’m pretty sure that a breeder is impossible, as such breeder would have to have frontend moving at c, the speed of light (1 cell pee generation), which is impossible. I may be wrong though.

Code: Select all

*really long RLE*
I cannot understand what you mean or what this pattern does. Please provide a text snippet that describes the RLE.

What's the smallest thing that we don't know it's lifespan?

I play it with rule

Code: Select all

@RULE RightGenLife

Four-state Life with an eastbound generator.
State 2 is a generator over empty space; state 3 is a generator over live space.
Generators move east at lightspeed and leave ordinary live cells behind.

https://www.muye.dev wrote: June 28th, 2026, 7:44 pm Can anyone make a breeder using this?
See https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Ants#Quadfuse. I’m pretty sure that a breeder is impossible, as such breeder would have to have frontend moving at c, the speed of light (1 cell pee generation), which is impossible. I may be wrong though.
I play it with rule

Code: Select all

@RULE RightGenLife

Four-state Life with an eastbound generator.
State 2 is a generator over empty space; state 3 is a generator over live space.
Generators move east at lightspeed and leave ordinary live cells behind.

Well, it depends on how you define "lifespan" and "smallest".
Under my definitions (smallest = cell count) its the Twin prime calculator.

https://www.muye.dev wrote: June 28th, 2026, 7:44 pm Can anyone make a breeder using this?
See https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Ants#Quadfuse. I’m pretty sure that a breeder is impossible, as such breeder would have to have frontend moving at c, the speed of light (1 cell pee generation), which is impossible. I may be wrong though.
I play it with rule

Code: Select all

@RULE RightGenLife

Four-state Life with an eastbound generator.
State 2 is a generator over empty space; state 3 is a generator over live space.
Generators move east at lightspeed and leave ordinary live cells behind.

Probably found a new methuselah

I accidentally found this pattern after adding a single extra cell to a beehive. (These are the 2 variants of it)

Image

It stabilizes after exactly 1100 generations, leaving an ash consisting of 8 blocks, 4 blinkers, 2 boats, 1 loaf and 4 beehives.

During its evolution it produces 8 gliders, although the sixth and eighth one survives for only 10 generations before colliding with the remaining reaction.

I'd like to call it 0-heptomino if this hasn't been catalogued.

This is generation 2 of the R-pentomino.

Welcome to the Forums!

If you select your pattern in LifeViewer (using the select tool) and copy it, you can get the RLE of your pattern.
You can use the RLE to allow other people to try your pattern as well without having to draw it manually.
To do this, paste your RLE between pattern tags, which look like this:

Code: Select all

[pattern][/pattern]
Click the pattern button above your post editor text area to add them to your post. (Code and LV tags also work, but LV tags are usually discouraged.)
Like this:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
2bo$2obo5b2o$bobo4bo2bo$2bo6b2o$9bo!
The two variants in your first image are actually the same, since patterns in CGoL evolve the same even if they're rotated or flipped.
hotdogPi was right; it's generation 2 of the R-pentomino, one of the first patterns investigated in CGoL.
Also, you wouldn't call it 0-heptomino, since it's not a heptomino, but rather a heptaplet.

If you put the pattern into catagolue (https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object/xp4 ... zw11/b3s23), it having a glider synthesis (especially given that it's 220G) means that someone knew of it and put effort into the synthesis (as opposed to, say, if it were like 6-10G and maybe produced by automated scripting and not particularly known to people).

Hello,

I think I’ve found a new still life, but I’m not sure whether it has already been discovered or has a commonly used name.

Here is the pattern:

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
4b2o$3bo2bo$3bo2bo$b2o4b2o$o8bo$o8bo$b2o4b2o$3bo2bo$3bo2bo$4b2o!

If it has already been discovered, I’d be interested to know its name or where it has been documented. If not, I’d be happy to hear what people think of it.

Welcome to the forums !

As for your pattern, I'm 99.99% confident that it's already known. Also, it's not what we would call a "notable" pattern.

Take some time to read the posts here—you'll learn a lot. For example, if you enclose your pattern code between the tags pattern and /pattern (surrounded by square brackets), it will be easy for everyone to view the pattern using the forum's built-in viewer:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

In this case, the pattern you posted is already known and has a name (Lake 2). Also, the forum rules state that

Some specific examples of discoveries that won't be of interest to this community include:

If you decide to share your discovery with the forums, please do not post an image of the pattern. Instead, post the RLE code of the pattern within "pattern" tags. The easiest way to obtain the RLE code of a pattern is to select the pattern in Golly and then copy it to your clipboard.

Enclose all patterns within "pattern" tags. "LV" tags should only be used in extremely rare cases, primarily when the topic of the post is an animation displayed by LifeViewer waypoint commands included in the RLE comments. In those rare cases when using "LV" tags, the [[ THUMBNAIL ]] command should be used to reduce the amount of vertical space taken up by the viewer.

In this case, it is very easy to construct arbitrary still-lifes, most of which are not notable and not of interest.

There are a lot of ways to find patterns, presuming you mean new ones, from advanced search programs to just extending a large still life with a motif or two. Its probably better if you ask that question here to keep things on topic, because this is a question that can go many ways.

Welcome to the forums!
There are many pattern-searching programs. that are used to search patterns in Conway's Game Of Life. Here's an online program that searches low-period oscillators.

Try checking out for your pattern on the wiki before you post if you're unsure about it's discovery. You can also check out collections like Catagolue, newjslife, or jslife-moving.

New 6-cell methuselah lasting 1101 generations

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share a 6-cell methuselah that I discovered by manual experimentation.

It lasts exactly 1101 generations before stabilizing, leaving a final population of 116 cells and producing gliders along the way. It gets incredibly close to the legendary "Century" methuselah!

Here is the RLE code for anyone who wants to test it:

Code: Select all

#N 6-cell 1101g
#R B3/S23
4bO$2bOb2O$bObO!
Let me know what you think!

Two almost identical threads were created, and I merged them. You can tell originally which posts were in which threads by the post titles. --hotdogPi

Edit 2: The combined thread has been merged with Unsure Discoveries. --hotdogPi

Hello,

I want to share a 6-cell methuselah that I discovered through manual experimentation.

Welcome to the forums!

The pattern you posted has a malformed RLE, but examining it further reveals it is actually equivalent to generation 2 of the R-pentomino. They converge at generation 5 (of the R).

Also, keep in mind that posting in an existing thread is usually better than creating a new one. This thread should probably be merged with Thread for your unsure discoveries or Thread For Your Accidental Discoveries.
