If I understand correctly, the idea is this?
  • It should be "easy" (possible via reprogramming) to configure the metacell to follow arbitrary isotropic rules, with an arbitrary symmetric neighbourhood on the square tiling. In particular, each of 2^18 Life-like CA, and each of 2^102 CA definable via Hensel notation, should be "easy" to configure.
  • It should be "hard" (impossible without a substantial redesign) to have the metacell following non-isotropic rules.

The metacell should be only able to emulate isotropic non-totalistic rules. I don't specify the range and number of states the metacell capable to run, but the one that emulates range-1 2 state INT rules should be easy enough (through actually harder than anisotropic metacells).

I think you didn't answer the question I asked.

By "isotropic non-totalistic", do you mean just "isotropic, not necessarily outer-totalistic", or rather you are expressly excluding "outer-totalistic"?

Should it be possible to emulate Life-like cellular automata "on equal footing" with other isotropic CA on the square tiling, or they should be specifically unemulatable without a significant redesign?

By isotropic non-totalistic, I always include outer-totalistic as subset unless otherwise noted. The metacell should be capable to emulate isotropic non-totalistic rules as well as outer-totalistic rules.

As far as I understand, that is equivalent to just saying "isotropic", right? I think just writing "isotropic" communicates the idea better.

To check the amount and position of its neighbors, a cell checks if the element it's in, and elements of 1 index up and down, contains cell at position of x-1 to x+1, which x is the position of the cell itself.
Made this using a different implementation.

Warning: Extreme lag.

This CA simulator uses three lists to store informations of each cell, including X & Y position and state. By default the CA follows R1,C2,S2-3,B3 (B3/S23), but could be modified (internally) to use different rules, or even different neighbourhood.

Surprisingly this approach only uses a minimum of 15 scripts and 82 blocks.

Till now the ability to make custom patterns and viewing patterns graphically aren't implemented.
