This is strange because 396 is 9 * 44, an odd multiple of 44. But if you run it for half the period (198 generations), the oscillator looks the same but reflected. If you then run it again for 198 more generations, it returns to the original state.

I think it's a pretty nice illusion how that odd multiple of 44 comes about from a seemingly doubled reaction.

That 17-bit still life can be found on Catagolue: xs17_0j5c4oz34311 and already appeared in final patterns evolved from many pseudorandom soups.
The still life itself is not very interesting, because all small still lives were enumerated long ago. OTOH if there is a simple reaction that leads to it, that might lead to a useful glider synthesis.

It might be possible to turn that reaction into a synthesis that would throw the still life from the source, but probably that would not beat variations of the existing synthesis.

With a connectable U-turner source, that would make a block keeper (the block does not have to be present for the reaction to work).
The G -> U shown in G-to-X (November 2023) does not seem to connect.
