As another side note, the list is incomplete. Many other things certainly could be included in the list (for example, different rulesets, rulespaces, making tangible Life/CA-related things, ...)
https://cafaq.com/

Talking about people and/or their behaviour is not included. That's intentional.

@tommyaweosme, let me be serious here. Please read this post very, very carefully, in detail, word-for-word. Please don't let our opinions as forumites go unnoticed to you.

Back in January, I had written for you a post that hopefully gave you an outline on what to do to explore CA in a productive manner.

Welcome to the forums, tommyawesome! :D

Generally, most of the 'interesting' outer-totalistic rules can be found on the LifeWiki.

To me, B3/S34, though it doesn't have an article in the LifeWiki, is interesting to me simply because it was one of the first ever CA that I investigated. I found the same objects as you, but gave them different names.

I originally called the three 4-cell p2s 'block', 'reflector', and 'tripod' (guess which is which), and the p16 'hexadecimal'. (Sidenote: it was this CA that spurred me on to create this game.)

Here's my advice to you (and all newbies to CA) on which sites to go to find out whether a pattern you discovered is new.
[...]
but you seem to have ignored me.

Over time, various people have given you feedback on your idiosyncratic behaviours, like necroposting:

tommyaweosme wrote: May 18th, 2024, 9:23 am sandbox is for necroposts to rejuvenate previous sandbox posts. theres a reason no one minds my necroposts on old sandbox posts. if i did that on say, patterns, i would get more discipline than being politely asked to stop by one person
1. H. H. P. M. P. Cole liked my post, and b-engine just told you to stop necroposting, that makes 3 people;
2. You rarely see necroposts by other people, even for threads that are dead for just a few months, and the usual necropost contains some useful stuff;
3. One of the necroposts i quoted is in general discussion and not the sandbox;
4. Most people are able to tolerate necroposts, so they don't come out to post about it.

If you really want to necropost, try to include something useful/contributive/highly interesting, so no one will mind the necroposts.
And I created a second post regarding productive contribution (which I have co-written with NimbleRogue), since you seem to have ignored my first one:
H. H. P. M. P. Cole wrote: May 31st, 2024, 9:17 pm I just wanted to write this to you, tommyaweosme.

How does one find discoveries? One does not simply look at one 1000x1000 soup, take all the objects from there, and say 'hey look there is my collection'. If one wants to find discoveries by hand, it is very arduous to do so. That is why search programs exist.
[...]
I am not trying to be critical, I am just telling you how you can contribute more productively to the community.
Not to mention other people telling you to contribute productively in the field of CA and on the forums, in many ways:
wwei47 wrote: May 31st, 2024, 9:42 pm Hello there! Having been in a similar position to you back in 2017, I can see that you have enthusiasm for CA, that you have the drive to do research, and that you genuinely care about this stuff. I am on your side, and I am willing to fight for you. However, I am unable to do much without you also putting in the effort to learn. [...]
confocaloid wrote: June 27th, 2024, 6:12 am [...]
If you don't listen to other people (including myself), I'm going to start reporting short "chat-like" posts you make, more or less semiautomatically as soon as I see them.

Mods won't be particularly happy with lots of reports; but on the other hand, I'm pretty sure that mods aren't happy with your chatlike activity here, either; whether or not it gets reported is secondary to whether or not it happens. It shouldn't really happen here. These forums are for sharing and discussing interesting nontrivial Life/CA-related ideas, reactions, patterns, algorithms, software tools.

@tommyaweosme, you seem to have reached 1000 posts already, after several warnings from various people including moderators that you're posting way too much. Read what confocaloid says in the last post, very carefully -- I'd guess that it's a very good representation of the opinion of a large majority of the community here.

I sent a "final warning" to you in a PM on June 22nd, but I wasn't completely clear that enormous volumes of posts with little or no CA content are not welcome on the forums, even in the Sandbox.

You're definitely not going to get to 10,000 posts in three years, because moderators' tolerance for noisy newcomers will have worn off long before then. As I have mentioned to you, you're really not a newcomer any more, and you've made so many posts now that your grace period has pretty much expired already. So --

6 posts per day is not a good thing unless you're making major contributions to CGOL or OCA. I have 1.20, and that's with finding oscillators and oscillator partials and discussing other things in the Patterns subforum. You spend most of your time in Sandbox (over 75% of posts), and you don't even research your OCA rules to find if they're interesting or not.

Pretending to be a bird has nothing to do with this forum.

Creating Google Docs forms about AI has nothing to do with this forum.

Caring about your post count has nothing to do with this forum.

I don't think you understand the purpose of this forum. It is not for random posting. This is an academic forum. If you are not willing to contribute in a serious manner, you should not be here.
The conclusion? I don't think you seem to know the purpose of this forum. This is an academic forum, not a chat or microblogging platform. And yet you seem to have ignored this forum rule almost completely.

You do not take the time to research about ruletables or HROT rules with custom neighbourhoods.
You do not take the time to download LLS to find a small infinite growth pattern in Speciation.
You do not take the time to research your CA rules and make sizable pattern collections in them.
You do not take the time to check whether a pattern is a gun or a wickstretcher.
b-engine wrote: June 14th, 2024, 8:05 pm
tommyaweosme wrote: June 14th, 2024, 8:02 pm thats a gun
No, as the spaceships interacts with each other which otherwise become larger.[...]
You do not take the time to read the forum rules carefully and follow them completely.

You do not take the time to understand the feedback we as forumites have given you regarding your behaviour on this forum.

Are you even interested in CA anymore?

Now, @tommyaweosme, I do not want you to reply to this post with a one-liner and squishmallow flamingoship your way out of this mess you have created on this academic forum. I want you to read this post extremely carefully. Read all the comments people have given you regarding productive contribution on the forums. Ask them through private messages what they mean if you do not understand what they are talking about.

This is an academic forum, not a chat or microblogging platform. Do you want to follow this rule in every post you create? If not, then leave this forum immediately.

That's why I posted my previous post in this thread. I didn't tell them to "leave this forum immediately" because it's obvious that they are interested in CA. It's just that there are some non-obvious rules on top of being genuinely curious about the topic.

Feeding energy for the pendulum of overenthusiasm to go back and forth between newcomers and gatekeepers isn't the purpose of this forum, either.

At this rate, the server may be clogged up with non-useful posts, taking away from the servers memory. This is clearly not a good thing, as other people make more important posts.

equation to predict rlifesrc time to find (still life)
600*(n!)
n is the number of cells you have
this calculates the amount of nanoseconds it will take

if you want something that calculates the amount of seconds it will take, that is easy too
(6*10^-7)(n!)
edit: VERY innacurate. assumes everything is searched in chronological order

Are there any similar oscillators/spaceships, growing by 1 cell every generation until it restarts in its cycle?

i ran this pattern (generates toad) in baba is you

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
o$o3$2o$5b4o$4bo3bo$o7bo6b2o$o3bo2bo7b2o!
i therefore declare this collision is called the "baba is you" collision

Code: Select all

wall not near wall and wall is empty
wall near wall and wall and wall and wall is empty
empty near wall and wall and wall and not near wall and wall and wall and wall is wall
using a few other mechanics to make a pattern maker in baba is you (code below) i emulated this pattern

Code: Select all

wall is [] is push
[] [] flag is wall

baba is you
keke is you2
baba on keke is algae
empty left algae is baba
algae is flag
the extra domino sparks are included because they were there in the original.
