Actually, I derived it from Achim's p144.

I found another puffer-based methuselah. This pattern stabilizes after 126,932,978 generations (126932978M). It fits into a 20x20 bounding box. I will post the script I used to help find it in the ‘Golly Scripts’ topic sometime soon. It is not a fully automated script though, as it requires some manual input.

Unless I'm misunderstanding previous methuselahs, the previous methuselah was 13,629,876M. I have two questions.
How did you even run a simulation for that long, and what are your computer specs?

There must be huge numbers of reasonable-sized QB ancestors. Here's a collection from the old octohash database, in case they come in handy.
Obviously they can all be easily delayed or advanced by some number of ticks to make them match up with a small-population switch-engine predecessor.

Since the only interactions between the queen bee and the puffer are the destruction of the loaf and the B hitting the blinker, you can adjust the queen bee by an even number of generations.

Let's see, I can get two additional ticks before stabilization with 27 cells, at the cost of a slightly bigger bounding box (22x23 instead of 23x21):

When we're talking about a time to stability of over 126 million ticks, it's not at all clear why time to stabilization should be prioritized over population or bounding box. No doubt we can get a little more time and a slightly smaller bounding box just by running JLS on these three clumps.

Now trying to figure out where the final bit of novelty dies out in these patterns. Couldn't locate it on the first try -- more here shortly, most likely.

EDIT: There's a final glider hitting a beehive and turning it into a block, just northwest of (-5859385, -5859168).

EDIT2: If someone decides bounding box is more important than population, then it's pretty easy to convince JLS to produce things like this:

(126932976M)

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
3bob3o$2bo4bob2o$6ob3o$2b5o$5b4o$4bobo$ob4o$4bo$bo2bo$o2b3o12bo$o3b2o

(126932981M, v.2, smaller but higher population)

Code: Select all

No doubt in the hands of someone competent, JLS could pack that pattern a little smaller or drag it backwards a little farther.

EDIT by dvgrn to add some kind of a label: U-turner goes through a conduit and then does something very un-conduit-like to a big oscillator, extending a three-cell corner into a five-cell hook. This would make the conduit not usable again, so it's probably more of a glider synthesis component than a conduit (but we already have components that do that particular trick).

I'm familiar with ones that do it from the top, with nothing adjacent on the right, but that table makes most of them problematic. This one comes in strictly from the left, and leverages the P2 rotor in a way that wouldn't be possible with still-life-based components.

Very strange but probably useless, found an alternative way to remake the block from a usual H-to-X conduit:

several other still life can work instead of the boat. The interest is that the interaction with the boat can only happen at 1 point in time, so one might be able to place the boat asynchronously to the conduit being used. That being said, it is very unlikely that the downstream could robustly handle both possible outputs, and clean the leftovers, but maybe this deserve to be searched to make a conduit.

It's probably not notable. There are thousands of c/3 spaceships on odd symmetry width 10, and your spaceship isn't the smallest of something. Sokwe has done some exhaustive searching using knightt, and the results are publicly available on github.

This one is in the moving objects collection (velocity-c5o/ships-c5o-2.rle bottom row, third from the left). How did you find it?

I used ntzfind. Its the only search program I could get to work on my computer

You don't need that whole complicated part at the bottom; just use the two pieces at the top to create the pseudo-still-life from two mirrored still-lifes, and the 2-glider diehard to provide a spark to cleanly add the 1-bit bridge.

Hi all, Newbie Chris here, I would love your feedback on the below experimentation with centered and asymmetric streams of dots representing the Fibonacci Series. Please note, to achieve symmetry you will always need +1 Fibonacci number on the right hand side.

x = 25, y = 1, rule = B3/S23

Welcome to the forums! I've moved this post over to a thread where it won't be off-topic.

You seem to have gotten RLE figured out, except that the "x = 25" at the top is more than a little misleading -- the one-line pattern is actually so big that it won't fit in LifeViewer. The usual thing is to surround RLE with "code" tags (in square brackets -- use the </> button in the forum editor to make them appear around a selection). I've done that in the quoted message above.

There's another useful trick for handling patterns of this size. Golly can run them more efficiently -- especially in the second half of the evolution -- using its "HashLife" algorithm instead of the "QuickLife" algo which is the default for RLEs. So to publish this in the most convenient format for people to copy into Golly and try out, you would save the pattern in Golly in macrocell format:

Code: Select all

LifeViewer doesn't support .mc macrocell files, but your pattern is so wide that LifeViewer can't handle it anyway.

While I'm at it, I might as well copy in here my response to a recent email from you:

Subject: Life pattern

Hi Dave,

I was just scouring your website and I find it impressive, thank you!

I was playing with patterns out of curiosity and I came across one I find interesting, and I wasn't able to find anything related.

My idea is to sequence Fibonacci numbers by numbers of neighbouring dots, try this one here please:

........ ..... ... .. . .

It gets weirder by how many iterations you add...
In an email, dvgrn wrote:Aha, you seem to have discovered the amazing world of symmetrical CA patterns! I've tried out your two examples. Here's the format that Lifenthusiasts usually use to send this kind of thing around via email:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 1, rule = B3/S23
8ob5ob3ob2obobo!
and

Code: Select all

x = 49, y = 49, rule = B3/S23

You can paste those "RLE strings" in to Golly or LifeViewer, for example -- e.g., click the "Show Advanced Options" here, paste your pattern, and click "Update LifeViewer":

https://conwaylife.com/

If you draw more of your own patterns, you can retrieve an RLE encoding of them from LifeViewer using the Copy option (or Ctrl+C).

----------------------------------------

Not too surprisingly, investigation of extensible patterns -- like what you're trying with your Fibonnacci-sequence line segments -- got started very early on in the 1970s.

The increasing weirdness from adding longer line segments is mostly due to long line segments causing increasingly impressive explosions the longer they are -- whether they're in company with other Fibonnacci-length lines or not. For example, you get four pulsars out of either length 41 or length 135 -- but in very different ways, and in the length-135 version two of the pulsars are temporary:

https://conwaylife.com/wiki/One-cell-thick_pattern

Code: Select all

x = 41, y = 1, rule = B3/S23
41o!

Code: Select all

x = 135, y = 1, rule = B3/S23
135o!
Along similar lines, the long history of these kinds of experiments means that I know off of the top of my head that if you start with a filled block that's exactly 83 ON cells on a side, you happen to end up with a final pattern that contains both period-2 blinkers and period-6 unix oscillators:

Code: Select all

x = 83, y = 83, rule = B3/S23
83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$

83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$
83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$
83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o$83o!
Keep the cheer,

Dave
