Oddly enough, those p5 volcanoes _are_ already somewhat reduced from the ones in the current gun collection. The problem here is that no checkins have been done to the actual
"ceebo glider guns" repository for a couple of years, so the p20N guns there aren't quite up to date. Anyone interested in volunteering for gun-collection maintenance? chris_c would probably appreciate a carefully constructed pull request to get everything back up to date -- or if not, I suppose a fork of the repository would work instead.
This new gun is related to the current p20, p40 and p80 guns, but the new mechanism is a bit wider than the
existing best mechanism so it doesn't actually set any records.

If we use the same p5 engine-supporting sparkers, the new gun would need to have a height of 29 to break the record, but I think I've eliminated the possibility of a p4 or p5 glider-releasing sparker at that height.

The p20 article does need an update -- it will be good to get links in to the more recent period-20 gun variants.
Whoever tackles this editing job should maybe have a look at the
period-24 glider gun article as a model. The original meaning of "period-24 glider gun" was the one Noam Elkies put together in 1997, and that's still what the first paragraph of the article says. Later paragraphs describe later, smaller discoveries. Ideally the pattern shown in the infobox should be the most recent discovery -- and the first pattern in the Gallery section should show the original version.
... That said, the period-24 glider gun article also seems to need an update. The current best p24 gun is 42x31, but the LifeWiki's displayed version is 43x32.

Nah, it was me that was missing something again -- I only looked in the ceebo glider gun collection, which is again not up-to-date, and didn't check all the bounding boxes.
Does it make sense to everyone that the goal should be to have the current smallest known "period-N glider gun" shown in the infobox for the LifeWiki article, for each N -- but that the Gallery section should show previous gun variants that used to be the smallest, so that if someone was talking about "period-N glider gun" ten years ago, it's still possible to figure out from the article what exactly they were talking about?

Alternatively, it seems possible that someone might be able to prove that there are no predecessors of a domino spark that
work in that location and that move into position fast enough to actually let that particular glider escape. (?)

My new p48 emits sparks. Is there any way to make a gun from this? It would be 41×30 plus whatever is used to convert the sparks into gliders, while the existing dueling banjos p48 on the wiki is 51×35.

The new p20 gun reminded me of
Kazyan's p87 gun that uses the same block+pre-pi -> glider reaction. It seemed unlikely that a p3 would work, because the reaction takes place very close to a catalyzing block, but JLS was astoundingly able to find a solution:
