2025/2/18 - How on earth is that gigantic thing a Mysterious Fragment??? The mystery comes from how you
managed to work with the purple cells. This thing never had any purple cells in it to begin with.

I think this thread should be rebooted (as a completely new thread) with no references to real people. If you want to tell a story, you could create some original characters write about. Looking back through this thread, there are some potentially rule-violating jokes about other people. I'm leaving this unlocked for now, for anyone who wants to comment on this, but if you want to continue writing such stories, please create a new thread with a new story that doesn't involve real people.

It's possible that I do have enough of a sense of humor to recognize that the topic of this thread could be pretty entertaining, if the fake quotes were constructed carefully enough to not offend anyone.

However, there are an awful lot of ways that people could get the wrong idea from this thread, and accidentally invent things that could be interpreted as attacks on other people.

So I've gone ahead and locked this thread.

Quotation blocks on the conwaylife.com forums are intended to be used for academic reference purposes, displaying and linking to exact copies of (parts of) previous posts. I've spent quite a bit of time reminding people not to alter stuff inside quote blocks.

If you're trimming a quote down and you remove something in the middle, standard practice is to replace the removed text with ellipses (...). If you don't do this, your quotation may be accidentally misleading.

If you're replacing a section of a quote with more specific words that convey the intended meaning better in a short excerpt, then standard practice is to enclose the replacement word(s) in square brackets. If you don't do this, your quotation may be accidentally misleading.

A Somewhat Contrived Example

Suppose I want to quote some of the key details in this sentence, as briefly as possible:

The code limits the maximum size that intermediate target patterns can attain, and the Life rule is hard-coded in the form of optimized bit-twiddling in several places -- see the GoLGrid_evolve_... functions.

The quote isn't terribly clear out of context, because it's not clear what "The code" refers to. It's still a valid quote in this form:

[simeks' single-channel search code] limits the maximum size that intermediate target patterns can attain, and the Life rule is hard-coded ... see the GoLGrid_evolve_... functions.

But it would not be a valid quote in the following form --
