Wandering around and exploring is very Minecrafty. It is an essential part of the game.

several key aspects of mc require adventuring tho
rarely are nether fortresses found near where you start in the nether, and you need to reach one to "beat" the gamer (fortress -> blaze powder -> les yeux d'ender -> the end -> bread???)

In older versions you could get eyes from villager trades, but that also (usually) required exploration.
