Here's an interesting challenge: Using a periodic spaceship input (from a gun, but there need not be an actual gun, a long stream would suffice), do one of three related challenges:
1. construct a "macro-oscillator" with the highest period
2. construct a controllable wickstretcher of any period at any rate
3. construct a controllable fuse of any period at any rate
What I mean by "macro-oscillator" is that a spaceship hits a solid blob and makes something stable, say, a blinker, and then another spaceship on the same track hits that blinker (or the blob again) and produces something else, and so on, until it returns to its initial state. Here is a fourth, somewhat unrelated challenge:
4. construct a periodic negative-to-positive converter (we're talking same definition of "periodic" here as before)
This means that a spaceship gets converted (which may or may not do "damage"), and any number of identical spaceships along the same track (as if from a gun) then restores it. Here's an example of number 1 (p2):
Code: Select all
x = 50, y = 5, rule = B017/S01
2o$2o8bo12bo12bo12bo$8bo12bo12bo12bo$8bo12bo12bo12bo$10bo12bo12bo12bo!
Here's a p4 example:
Code: Select all
x = 79, y = 53, rule = B017/S01
4b2o$4b2o21$2o$2o$8bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo$6bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo$6b
o9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo$8bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo9bo2$2o$2o21$4b2o$4b2o!
On a different note (such as D#), here is a p128 oscillator:
Code: Select all
x = 14, y = 33, rule = B017/S01
12b2o$12b2o$4b2o$4b2o6$2o$2o$2o9$3b2o$3b2o2b2o$3b2o$9bo2$7b2o5$11b2o$
