No, always. The smallest infinite growth patterns have 10 cells.

Oh yeah, like

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

It's debatable whether an infinite-growth pattern has infinite population, but it's easy to create patterns with arbitrarily high score (without complicated machines):

Code: Select all

x = 178, y = 196, rule = B3/S23
2o$obo$2bo$2b3o$5bo$2b3o$2bo$obo$2o182$176bo$174bob2o$174bobo$174bo$
172bo$170bobo!

Code: Select all

x = 2603, y = 2620, rule = B3/S23
2o$obo$2bo$2b3o$5bo$2b3o$2bo$obo$2o2606$2601bo$2599bob2o$2599bobo$
2599bo$2597bo$2595bobo!
However, as I said before, such patterns are clearly not in the spirit of this game, which is to create explosions that produce a lot of junk.

Now let's see what we can do with

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
2o2bo2bo$2o2b4o2$8o$o6bo$3b2o$3b2o!
261 points

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
