You can string a Snark and a pipsquirter reflector together to turn a glider 180 degrees, but this loses the advantage that a Snark has of reflecting a glider stream of period above p43 without issue. Making a new reflector is unlikely to work, or at least be any more useful than a pipsquirter reflector or the Snark alone. Let me explain:
The snark's catalyst was discovered with a program called Bellman, for that specific appliciation. When bellman finds large still lifes like the Snark catalyst, it doesn't tell you what it can be used for. Often, the reaction you're examining is the
only reaction it can do anything with. Observe:
Code: Select all
x = 12, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
3bo$2bobo$3bo5b2o$8bobo$b5o2bo$o2bo2bob2o$2o3b2obo2bo$10b2o6$5b3o$5bo
2bo$7b2o!
See that 27-cell catalyst at the top? It reacts with the century, but there has to be that specific combination of cells in front of it, or it just breaks and can't be reused. (I found this catalyst with Bellman, but didn't post it to the Herschel thread because there seems to be no way to coax a glider/Herschel/R/Pi/B/Century/Block-and-glider/anything-useful out of it.)
The Snark catalyst is the same way. It only really works for the specific interaction going on in the Snark.
