This works:

EDIT: Also this:

Furthermore, the phi spark contains one segment of the fuse. Does that mean a synthesis might be possible after all?
Could this be used as a circuit that can store memory?

P.S.: The glider can start from other places nearby that also produce very little debris.

You would need to be able to build a track of blocks, as well as destroy the debris, both in an asymmetric fashion. That seems quite difficult to me.

A track of blocks in the right area would get destroyed by an annoying spark

Someone has probably discovered it (do let me know), but otherwise, a block acts as a catalyst for 2 gliders to create a long boat:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
5bo$o4bobo$b2o2b2o$2o3$4b2o$4b2o!
Quite neat, does not change the bottom half of the block at all (so it be on a table or anything).

EDIT: massive use, for read/write memory:

Code: Select all

Reactions that require 2 or more synchronized gliders require a lot more work to set up than ones requiring only one. If this cannot always be done, it is usually a good idea if the reaction has benign effects, should any of the gliders be missing. In this case, either one of the incoming gliders alone destroys the block (one cleanly, one not).

The Boat Bit reaction is ideal - it takes one glider on one lane to set, and another glider on the same lane to reset, and has negligible cool down time. A synchronized glider on an adjacent lane can read if the bit reset at that very moment, and passes by harmlessly if it is being set, or not currently affected at all.

Ahhh when you see a 2-glider mechanism to move a block by 1 cell, so precisely that it can react immediately in the same way as a block would, with no differences at all. (This probably exists)

Not useless, but someone might have seen it before:

A fairly compact Wing eater, only a block and a tub... the best thing is that the tub is a rock, so it can be extended on the other side to a boat, barge, long boat, long long barge with tail, etc. and even a loaf (either orientation), beehive or hat since it is only that one live cell on the right hand side that acts as the rock.
