My presentation and some work of mine.

Post by lapaz »

Hi everybody.

I am studing java programing, and I made a little program that generates a random seed with random rules in a space closed, without borders. The output is a jpg file for every frame.

I define rules in the following way:

Example:
Black cell.
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
0 1 1 0 1 1 0 0 1
(if there are 1,2,4,5 or 8 black cells surrounding the cell changes to white)

white cell.
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 1
(if there are 4,5 or 8 black cells surrounding the cell changes to black)

Some random "universes" that seems interesting to me:

The top left number is the frame number and the 0,1 strings, are the rules.

And here a gif of an "universe" similar to classic life, but its rules are defined differently that I explain at begining:

I hope you like it ;).

Well done! Your pictures are reminiscent of the illustrations in Wolfram's "A New Kind of Science". Please zip up your source code and post it so that we can enjoy your program. I hope in the future you expand your program to include rule families allowing users to select and explore interesting rules and graphical editing allowing users to construct and explore interesting patterns.

Look at this thread which was recently featured here:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=597#p4085

It starts with a definition of a fascinating new rule that was invented by a human brain and ends with a delightful collection of guns which were constructed by a human brain. Consider a program that could find this rule and generate the gun collection without the help of a human brain. Even a program as sophisticated as Golly cannot do that.

hello bprentice.

You can select "rules" and "configuration" of my program, changing the value of variables from source code. I dont know how to make a good user interface.

Now I am programming to save data generate by program in a mysql DB, and to get data from DB too.

The main problem of generate universe by random rules, is that the 80% of universes are chaotic and expansive, I would like to make a algorith to discard chaotic universes, and save "specials" automatically. Now, I have to check all for get universes with intereting patterns.

The rules you commented, seems interesting, but I am exploring from basic life rules, only 1 or 0. Six states seems to me too much!!.
