This is either an interesting new feature or something I didn't notice before:

For LifeWiki embedded LifeViewers, e.g., the one on the Very_long_boat page, it used to be that if you wanted to see how the pattern behaved, you'd click on the embedded viewer to get a pop-up window, then move the cursor to the pop-up window so that it would grab keystrokes, then hit [Enter] to start the pattern running. I don't remember it being possible to actually see the pattern running in the original embedded window, unless the viewerconfig included an AUTOSTART script command.

Now suddenly when I click and open the popup window, then hit [Enter] immediately without moving the mouse, the animation starts in the original embedded viewer instead of in the pop-up.

This kind of makes me want some way to choose where I want to run the pattern. If things are adequately visible in the embedded viewer, why bother to open the popup at all? But very often the popup is good to have for the pan and zoom and other controls, of course. The way it works now is really pretty good, except that if I close the popup I can't get the pattern running in the embedded viewer any more (without re-opening the popup).

--------------------------------

While I'm at it, I'll mention another oddity for which I haven't tracked down the source: click to open the popup, keep the mouse over the embedded viewer, and type Alt+N. A mysterious popup appears --
CreateNewPatternWithRule.png
CreateNewPatternWithRule.png (6.9 KiB) Viewed 171 times
-- and when you click OK, it breaks the embedded viewer (makes it much smaller, with a black theme).

This is an (unfortunate?) side-effect of the recent fix for slow-down on iOS. The fix was because for some reason when a Viewer has focus on iOS the update events only get delivered to LifeViewer 15 times a second (rather than 60) resulting in slowdown.
The fix was a) not to set focus when the PopUp Viewer launches and b) not to set focus when any touch events are registered.

This is OK for mobile since you can't use hotkeys.

Before the fix launching a PopUp Viewer would grab focus. Key strokes get delivered to whatever has focus.

So in this scenario on the desktop when you click on the embedded Viewer you are giving it focus. Next the PopUp Viewer launches and doesn't take focus. Any key presses go to the Viewer with focus which is the embedded one.

I think this would prove to be confusing. You have a choice: use an embedded one, or use a thumbnail embedded one to launch the PopUp :)

Alt+N is the hotkey for New Pattern that was introduced in Build 401.
When you ask for a New Pattern you're prompted for the pattern rule (defaults to the current rule). If you then click OK LifeViewer will restart with a blank pattern. It goes black because that's the default Theme background colour and a new pattern has no live cells.

You have hit a bug, however. It looks like New Pattern is fighting with Thumbnail settings. Of course, this wouldn't be an issue if I hadn't fixed the iOS performance issue because you'd never be able to run New Pattern on a thumbnail :)

EDIT: In fact what I'm planning on doing is preventing an embedded Viewer that's used to launch a PopUp (using THUMBLAUNCH) from retaining focus. This means I don't have to fix the much smaller bug and it clears up the confusion above.

Just noticed by accident that Build 441 doesn't seem to be playing well with Internet Explorer -- or maybe the other way around. (?)

My Windows 10 machine says it's running IE 11.1009.17134.0. Patterns show up on the LifeWiki, but the controls don't work -- the X button closes the pop-up window, but that seems to be about all. On the forums the "Show in Viewer" links aren't appearing, and [viewer] patterns have a big blank space where LifeViewer is supposed to be.

Just fixed. That must have been broken for a while so it shows how often people are using Internet Explorer.

RuleTable load tests

These tests just check if a named rule can be loaded from a wiki Rule: page.

RuleTable [should succeed]:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = DoubleB3S23
$bo3b3o$b3o2bo$2bo!
RuleTable with ICONS [should succeed]:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = MazeSolver
$bo3b3o$b3o2bo$2bo!
RuleTree [should succeed]:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = Hutton32
$bo3b3o$b3o2bo$2bo!
Should fail:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = MissingRule
$bo3b3o$b3o2bo$2bo!
