Try Build 295. If it works do you think you could see if Nathaniel can release it please. I've made it a Release Candidate!
Much better, and I like the drawing-state notification popups... with the minor caveat that they kind of get in the way of seeing the color picker bar for a moment, but that's probably only a (very minor) problem when I'm testing, not in actual use.

Anyway, I've emailed Nathaniel, and brought up the idea that maybe the contents of that Release folder could just be copied over automatically every night, or something like that. I suppose it might be some kind of security risk to allow .js files to get changed without human intervention, so we'll see what turns out to be possible.

I've moved the notifications down so they don't draw over the colour picker bar.

I'm getting back to working with labels in Build 295. Have run into a few puzzles, not all of them label-related:

1) LifeViewer complains about a pattern that's actually just inside the stated limits:

Code: Select all

#C [[ LABELT 0 999 9 LABEL 4096 4096 5 "Look, it's a tub" ]]
#C [[ X 0 Y 0 Z 8 ]]
x = 8192, y = 8192, rule = B3/S23
o4091$4092bo$4091bobo$4092bo4098$8191bo!
2) If I try opening LifeViewer for the pattern above, then for the pattern below, the viewport ends up stuck way down in the lower right corner.

3) It doesn't seem to be possible to label beyond (4096, 4096). (Refresh, then click on the "SHOW IN VIEWER" below without clicking the "SHOW IN VIEWER" above):

Code: Select all

#C [[ LABELT 0 999 0 LABEL 4096 4096 32 "Look,\nthere's a ship\non the horizon" ]]
#C [[ LABELT 0 999 09 LABEL 4106 4106 32 "Look, it's a ship" ]]
#C [[ X 0 Y 0 Z 32 ]]
x = 8191, y = 8191, rule = B3/S23
o4101$4101b2o$4101bobo$4102b2o4087$8190bo!
Behavior seems to be the same in Build 295 as in Build 292.

Build 296 is now available on the lazyslug server

Enhancements in this build:
  • multi-state drawing now supports all states
  • Help sections are displayed when topic is first displayed and disappear when clicked
  • added Help sections button to show Help sections when hidden
  • Help sections list updates as Help topic scrolls
Fixes in this build:
  • label positions were being validated against screen coordinates and not cell coordinates
  • patterns were not being correctly validated against maximum grid size
  • view offset was not being correctly reset when grid resized to default
This build is a Release Candidate.

All three should be fixed now.

Labels can be placed anywhere from (0, 0) to (maxgridsize - 1, maxgridsize - 1).

Whilst patterns can be maxgridsize x maxgridsize big I should probably reduce that by a border of at least the neighbourhood range. For a future build.

Thanks! Yup, everything looks good now. Nice to have my timeline labels back -- I'm finally adding discoveries from the current millenium, and had to increase the pattern size.

LifeViewer has gotten sufficiently awesome that I keep forgetting about features that were added a while ago that I really ought to be using, like Shift + K.

I figured my best bet at finding trouble quickly would be to look at LifeHistory patterns. Running this test pattern to stability and then copying it out turns up a few odd/interesting things:

Code: Select all

#C [[ COLOR ON 49 26 213 COLOR ALIVE 49 26 213 COLOR DEAD WHITE COLOR KILL 82 198 212 ZOOM 1 GPS 2 POPUPWIDTH 832 ]]

1) Running this at high speeds -- or possibly starting at low speeds and switching to high speeds on the fly, I can't quite reproduce it consistently yet -- often results in only some LifeHistory background getting recorded, even though it all gets displayed correctly. Here's part of a copied-out pattern at T=4000 or so. Seems like the glider impressions are getting taken about every 40 ticks, but it's not quite consistent... It's possible to get correct LifeHistory trails and incorrect LifeHistory trails for different gliders in the same pattern.

to stability (or any time after about 5000 ticks have passed) and then copied it out, there's a four-second delay and then LifeViewer reports "copied to clipboard", but the clipboard is not actually altered. Reverting to T=0 and copying works fine. A copy after anything up to 4000 ticks works fine.

It seems like a good idea for LifeViewer to have some kind of built-in defense against lockup when trying to copy out LifeHistory patterns that will be painfully enormous. The above non-spacefiller is actually a relatively nice case because it makes a solid interior, which doesn't produce as many megabytes of RLE as, say, a switch-engine breeder pattern with lots of messy gaps in the history state.

Doesn't have to be LifeHistory, of course, that's just one easy target for generating lots of cells and big RLE quickly. Build 297 can handle the following pattern at T=40, but fails silently while reporting success at T=50:

Code: Select all

x = 165, y = 134, rule = R20,C0,M0,S0..20,B1..5,NM

This is because the custom Theme used by that pattern doesn't display history so the LifeViewer runtime optimized out recording all of the history states - you basically get one every STEP generations. If you switched to a Theme that displays history before running all of the history states would have been recorded.
I've changed it so LifeHistory patterns to always record all history states since they become physical states in the pattern rather than ghost states used by the Viewer.

This has been fixed. The copy RLE function was using the alive cells bounding box rather than the all-cells bounding box (which is needed for LifeHistory patterns).
dvgrn wrote:When I ran this pattern to stability (or any time after about 5000 ticks have passed) and then copied it out, there's a four-second delay and then LifeViewer reports "copied to clipboard", but the clipboard is not actually altered.
For security reasons a browser will only let the clipboard be programmatically changed a) from a user interaction (like a keypress or mouse click) and b) if the interaction doesn't take too long.
In this case we're failing on b) since it's taking too long to generate the RLE.
I suspect the solution is to do it in two steps:
  • 1) Ctrl-C and generate RLE.
    2) Notify copy ready and ask for a click or keypress then copy generated RLE to clipboard.
dvgrn wrote:It seems like a good idea for LifeViewer to have some kind of built-in defense against lockup when trying to copy out LifeHistory patterns that will be painfully enormous.
It won't lockup permanently it'll just be slow.
dvgrn wrote:... fails silently while reporting success at T=50
Nothing I can do about this since the browser doesn't tell me if the copy worked. Hopefully I'll remove the failures via the 2-step process outlined above.

Build 298 is now available on the lazyslug server

Fixes in this build:
  • copying LifeHistory RLE needs to use history bounding box
  • copy now happens in two steps to support large patterns
  • switch off custom Theme on new pattern load
  • always compute all history generations for [R]History patterns regardless of Theme
This build is a Release Candidate.

The copy now shows a progress bar (in the T box). Tested on Chrome and Firefox on Windows and seems to work.

Build 299 is now available on the lazyslug server

Enhancements in this build:
  • use single phase copy RLE if time and size are below thresholds
Fixes in this build:
  • graph and labels were not rendering during copy RLE or computing previous generations
  • graph was broken when computing previous generations
This build is a Release Candidate.

Single phase copy works on Chrome, FireFox, Opera and Edge.
Two phase copy works on Chrome, FireFox and Opera, but silently fails on Edge.

I can't test Safari because I don't have anything with a keyboard that runs it.

I'm afraid my standard tests -- which are fairly scattershot anyway -- are extraordinarily lax in the cross-browser testing department.

But even if I had a systematic test plan for Chrome and Opera and Safari and (reluctantly, see below) IE, I would categorically refuse to include Edge in the list -- that would effectively label it as a "browser", and I'd rather just keep it in my mental "mistake" bin. Maybe LifeViewer could detect Microsoft Edge and always change its title bar to "Attention: Your Current Browser Will Endanger Your Sanity".

-- I've been having plenty enough trouble even with Internet Explorer lately. I'm working a lot with Microsoft products and websites -- VSTS, their Developer Community bug- and feature-tracking site, etc. -- and things keep turning up that work fine in Chrome but fail silently in Internet Explorer (!).

Maybe LifeViewer could detect Microsoft Edge and always change its title bar to "Attention: Your Current Browser Will Endanger Your Sanity".
Edge is the *only* supported browser for which I have to do feature detection. Draw your own conclusions.

From my perspective the only "benefit" of Edge was it obsoleted IE. Now if only they could have done that without Edge...

And on a completely unrelated note LifeViewer was 4 years old recently! Build 129 was released to the forums on Feb 17th, 2015.

We should have a party for Build 300 :)

Multiverse mode is the first part of allowing Viewers to handle multiple patterns. In upcoming builds I'll add a GUI so you can select by clicking. At the moment you just use Page Up and Page Down to cycle through the patterns.

Now you can have a single HTML page with the RLE for all your patterns. A single Viewer will start by showing the first one which you can interact with. When you're ready pressing Page Down switches to the next pattern and so on. Like a slide show.

Wow! That's an ambitious addition, so a good match for Build 300. Seems to work beautifully. I'm surprised those hotkeys weren't already defined -- seems like there shouldn't be any left by this time.

Yes so was I and then I realised they're only used for scrolling the Help text.

I've improved the test case so it doesn't show any of the pattern RLE on the page.

Oh and while I remember:
If you're building large animations and don't need to step back in the patterns it's a really good idea to disable step back with the [[ NOSTEPBACK ]] script command. It will save lots of memory and improve playback performance.
