Golly 2.4 has been released
Golly 2.4 is now available from sourceforge:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/golly/ ... golly-2.4/
This release fixes a few bugs. In particular, the 64-bit Windows app can now use more than 4GB of hash memory. All the changes are listed here:

Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
When I press "Ctrl Z" to undo, I get an error message.

Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
What message exactly? Which platform? (Windows or Linux?) Is it 100% reproducible? If so, what are the steps that cause it?137ben wrote:When I press "Ctrl Z" to undo, I get an error message.
(If you're going to report a bug, please put a bit of effort into it!)
Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
Windows 7, it happens every time, when I press Ctrl+Z using any algorithm except quicklife. When I do it in hashlife b3/s23, the message is (I get all of these messages at once):
Error from Hashlife: node out of range in readmacrocell.
Error from quicklife: cannot read macrocell format.
Error from generations: missing expected slash in generations rule
error from JvN:This algorithm only supports these rules: JvN20, Nobili32, Hutton32
error from RuleTable: Failed to open file: (insert file name for a rule table)
error from rule tree: parse error in macrocell format.
For the other non-quick algorithms, the error from the algorithm I am using is "cell state values too high for this algorithm", while all the other errors are the same as what I wrote above.

Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
Ah, it sounds like you are loading a .mc file that was saved with timeline data from an older Golly version. That was one of the bugs we fixed in 2.4. You'll probably have to re-create that .mc file with 2.4.137ben wrote:... Error from Hashlife: node out of range in readmacrocell. ...
If I'm wrong about this then I'll need more clues:
Did you download Golly 2.4 from sourceforge? If so, did you get the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
Please describe the *exact* steps leading up to the error message from the time you start up Golly (ie. which algo you are using, which rule, which file you load, etc).
Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
Very strange. Now the undo button seems to be working fine, but .mc files do not load at all (they give me the same error messages as I already gave). This includes both .mc files I previously created, and ones in the hashlife folder included with 2.4. I'm not sure how to recreate them in version 2.4, since I can't open them to begin with.
The exact steps were:
I downloaded the 64-bit version of golly, clicked "save file." Then I opened the compressed folder (I did NOT extract all), then I copied the "golly 2.4" folder to the top of my downloads folder. Then I went into the golly 2.3 folder and copied all the rules and scripts into the correct 2.4 folders (hitting "don't copy" for duplicates), then I copied the 2.3 folder containing all the patterns I saved which were not included in the default pattern collection. Then I opened golly.

Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
My most heartfelt apologies; I cleaned up some warnings and somehow
this happened. I have not yet tracked down the specific reason, but I
have found that adding some printf's, or additional initializations, fixes
the problem. I have put new 64-bit Windows builds at
http://tomas.rokicki.com/golly-2.4-win64-5.zip
If anyone with access to a Win 64 system would try it out, I would be
most grateful.
The problem does not show up on 64-bit Linux or 64-bit Mac, and
since adding a single printf() fixes the problem, it *does* look like a
compiler problem.
Thank you for your patience.

Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
Tom's confident he has fixed the bug so I've uploaded his new 64-bit Win build to sourceforge.
Thanks for your bug report!

It is now working, thanks!
Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
Im new on the forums, i heard of the game of life and I like it. I was playing around and I have a question:
Theres a way of placing walls for the cells?
thanks
Toad4
EDIT: I discovered yhe bounded grids on golly and I dont know how to make it any help?

Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
Hi Toad4! Welcome!
It's also possible to create custom rules with "wall cells". For example, Extended Life as described in this topic has grey permadead cells (state 5) that work as walls. A small demo—
For bounded grids, try appending ":P200,100" to the rulestring (so in case of Life, you'd use either "B3/S23:P200,100" or "Life:P200,100"). This gets you a bounded grid with width 200 and height 100; you can set different numbers here too (use 0 for unlimited height or width while keeping the other one limited).Toad4 wrote:Im new on the forums, i heard of the game of life and I like it. Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
If you mean where do you type in rules like "B3/S23:P200,100", do it in the Set Rule dialog (at the bottom of the Control menu).Toad4 wrote:Ok, thanks but where I need to put the code?
Re: Golly 2.4 has been released
I mean the code that appears on the extended life post, but the other helped me. thanks
Toad4
EDIT: problem solved. I first thought that the rules where made on python, but was in C++ now im running extended life. thanks
