You mean to replace the 'doubly-excited crossover' (31) with the 'confluent state in its final level of excitation' (27)? That would indeed work correctly (if I'm not mistaken) and reduce the state count to 31. I imagine the reason that's not been done is because overloading a single physical state to behave as multiple logical states (depending on context) often makes things difficult to reason about at the expense of slightly reducing the state count. Either way, you need 5 bits to represent each cell irrespective of whether the number of states is 32, 31 or 29 (or even 17).

also, i’m working on optimizing the replicator body and tape, might be able to get 1,500 ticks off of the final product. A more realistic goal would be 500, though.

currently reduced bounding box, construction recipe beginning and end are now different.

I contemplated creating a variant of Nobili32 where confluent cells can't be created ex nihilo, but rather need to be collected as 'food particles' and positioned.

hmmm, seems like a nice concept: collecting food. I might be able to make an isotropic CA for that, in fact i already have some progress and it's already turing complete and probably construction universal too.

i'll be talking about such a rule in Sticky.
