I found a nice turning reaction for an R using two of the 2c/19 that might be used for a sawtooth:
The idea is simple:

Code: Select all

x = 348, y = 41, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e
8$339bo2$339bo$338b3o$334b2obo$334bo5bo$334b2obo$338b3o$339bo2$339bo3$
18b2o118b2o118b2o66b2o$19b2o118b2o118b2o66bo$19bo119bo119bo65b3o$18bo
119bo119bo73bo$331b3o$331b3o$329bob3o$327b3o4bo$326b2ob3obo$327b3o4bo$
329bob3o$331b3o$331b3o$332bo!
There is a sequence of R's with a certain front R which gets returned by the 2c/19 ships and eliminates the the R-salvo. Then the R which glides back must be again inserted in front of the salvo, then the same starts again, but the repeat time increases as the 2c/19 ships proceed forward which can give us a sawtooth.

The inserting mechanism could look like this (only one R which will be eliminated):

Code: Select all

x = 143, y = 174, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e

However, I failed to get everything with the right timing - here it fails in the 2nd cycle. One problem is that did not find a stable inserter, only a periodic one. Still, maybe someone can construct the sawtooth, I think it is feasible.

why insert the R in front of the stream when you can add it to the R gun?
That might sound confusing, so here's a proof of concept (a signal adds a G to the output of a p380 gun after 95 generations):

Code: Select all

x = 114, y = 96, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e

88bo$87b3o$87bobo$88bo!
This doesn't solve the periodicity problem, but that can probably be solved (like how Caber tosser 1 reflects gliders with a p30 oscillator)
Alternatively, just introduce a delay in the creation of the R.

less usefully, new repeat time 68 splitters (the 1st one has lots of variations):

Not sure if this stable 180° degree R to G reflector with a +1 shift is known:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 31, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e

It also allows for

But it only useful if a +24+8N delay in the reflector is required

Edit1:
A smaller trivial version works only for one colour of the R:

This reaction:

Final step for a p3 synth:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 15, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e
7bo$6bobo$6b3o$7bo3$2bo$3o$o$8b2o$8bo$8b2o$o$3o$2bo!
The upper glider can have tons of placements, this one was just the first I found.

I couldn't synthesize the double Z p3, the synthesis didn't have enough clearance, but I could do with the snowflake p3:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 17, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e
o10bo$bo8bobo$b2o2b2o3b3o$2o2b2obo3bo$5b2o3$10b2o$10bo$10b2o3$5b2o$2o
2b2obo$b2o2b2o$bo$o!
The incomplete R+G perpendicular collisions may reveal a Z synthesis, but I doubt it.

I wonder if it can be p18-ized.

Yes, I think it was known, at least it is contained in my small gun list:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 61, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e

Concerning the p3 synthesis and the 2 Z's. The Z has only one 3G synthesis. However, there are a couple of 4G synthesis which work with the 3G Z, so that we have 7G, e.g.:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 19, rule = B2ci3ai4c8/S02ae3eijkq4iz5ar6i7e
7b2o$2bobo2bo$2b3o2b2o2$2o$bob3o$2obobo5$9b2o$9bo$9b2o$2bo$b3o$bobo4b
2o$2bo5bo$8b2o!
meaning 9G in total. I also checked my (incomplete) 4G collision list for such a 2Z constellation but is was negative.

Two p18 oscillators, which could be regarded as failed/temporary p18 guns:

something related, turning a still life constellation with a G into a the p36 gun:

Even-bilateral neighbourhoods are 1e2ik3ary4aqrt5ijq6ac78.
Exactly one of these, S7e, is present in Snowflakes.
