Re: How do people search for new lifeforms?
I would say that it is a process like mathematics, where people have ideas and then discuss them with other people to make the finished product. It's like inventions.
After the initial hype caused by the Scientific American article about the Game of Life that was published in 1970, no new spaceships (the only ones then known were the glider and the xWSSs) were discovered until 1989. Then, a group of people (or so I believe) came together to share patterns. They were very successful, and pretty soon a whole community of Life enthusiasts emerged. It's still going on strong, as can be seen by the recent discovery of Gemini and the p31/37 oscillators.
We are still pushing the limits, particularly to discover a true replicator in Life (Gemini is merely a spaceship based on a replicator part, namely the Chapman-Greene construction arm). I'm thinking of this too. I hope you get inspired by this. I wish you all the best
