Since pond has only 8 cells, it's not surprising that all still lifes smaller than it were discovered in the early years of Game of Life exploration. In fact, there are only 12 of them (full list), and they all have wiki pages by now. I don't really know which of these still lifes you were referring to, as you didn't post it, but I think the closest thing to "a smaller version of pond" is a tub:

With that said, you can actually find new still lifes fairly easily if you aim at large bit counts. After all, there are infinitely many still lifes, and they are pretty easy to make by hand. However, there is little point in this, as these huge still lifes generally aren't very interesting. The only still lifes that are interesting are those that interact with other objects in meaningful ways, like eating gliders.

It is also quite interesting to enumerate small still lifes in order to answer questions like "How many still lifes with N bits are there?" and "What is the smallest still life with the property X?". I think we have enumerated a few billion of them so far.

Since you are new here, I think I can give you some advice.

Firstly, read the rules. They contain a lot of useful info, including even the notice that new still lifes aren't interesting.

Secondly, familiarize yourself with other people's work by reading these forums.

I don't think so, given that the voting system of these polls is not at all flexible, and adding anonymity to Pattern of the Year would probably do more harm than good.
