This has the same interior as my row 7 column 2. Yours is much smaller, but it does have the one drawback that it does contain interior empty cells that are not part of the original inverted still-life. All of my examples were careful to avoid that. I didn't attempt to find all solutions (because there are an infinite number of variations for most of these); I just tried to find one example for each still-life up to 10 bits for which such a construction is possible. There are infinitely many such invertible still-lifes (e.g. the longer snakes at least).

Speaking of still-lifes and interiors.....

I was wondering what was the smallest still life completely surrounded by another (meaning no gaps to the outside), measuring by how many cells are in the space between the two still lifes, and bounding box. The still life in the center also has to be removable without the surrounding still life collapsing, so something like this doesn't count:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 8, rule = LifeHistory

Here are a few smaller ones: 36 (14x12=168 or 13x13=169) and 34 (13x10=130). The third one forms a pseudo-still-life with the block, but you only ruled out collapsing, not adjacency. If the bounding object can itself be a pseudo-still-life, this brings it further down to 30 (10x10=100).

The two entries above are identical. I'm guessing the second one is supposed to be something else.

If no adjacency is allowed, this is probably the smallest possible:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

This is kind of an interesting case. It can be made into a toggle that accepts gliders from opposite directions, two lanes apart. A loaf toggle accepts gliders one lane apart, and a block toggle accepts gliders ten lanes apart... there are a few other examples, but not a huge number I don't think.

Still probably useless, since a couple of eaters or boat-bit catchers would take up about the same amount of space. But who knows -- maybe that 7-5-3-1 lightspeed spark will turn out to come in handy sometime.

Name suggestion: Stinger.

On a slightly related note, is it possible to turn a hf predecessor like this:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = LifeHistory
.C$3C$C.C$.C!

back into a beehive in the same spot?

If you can do this, and also extract some sort of glider output from it, then this could possibly be used as a "button" for something like a functional calculator, if anyone ever gets around to building such a crazy project.

I made a prototype push-button once (this was before Syringe existed). It's operated by clicking away the white cell pointed at by the arrow. The still lifes around that eater makes it immune from "pushing" it at the same time that the gauge glider reaches it:

Glider returns in the exact path it came from:

For no reason whatsoever, a completely synthetic soup that releases a loafer:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
o5bob3ob2obo$b2ob2o2bob2ob3o$11bo3bo$12bobo$b2o2bobo3bobobo$bobo2b2obo

2bo2b2o$11bo2b2o$o3bo6bob3o$2obo2b2ob7o!

Pains me to think how many of these could just get lost in Catagolue due to a stray glider or B-heptomino...

If you had a SHA-256 preimage of that soup, you could submit it to Catagolue...
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

However you do that. Might be someths to look into.

Even then, it would be a bit cheatish of me (it's basically just a loafer phase with a loaf predecessor, surrounded with non-interrupting junk) to upload it...

Here's another one, which is a bit more rushed:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

And one which is very, very obvious:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
