Eating beehives

Post by muzik »

Are there any c/2 orthogonal spaceships that can either eat these beehives, rotate them 90°, or turn them into blocks, while not being destroyed in the process?

Also, they have to be moving to the right while doing this.

The hives are 21 blocks apart (they have a line of 21 dead cells between them).

I don't think there is any spaceship that does that :|

well that's unfortunate.

Is there any ship of said description that can eat this arrangement, then?

that thing on the right is a block. For some reason it's clipping out the other two cells

If you're desperate, you could always dig the appropriate rake out of the jslife/c2-extended collection, and shoot the beehives down with p42 gliders. Might have a bad effect on the bounding box of your pattern, though:

This epic failure of a puffrake...
Ah, I didn't read your description of the beehives right. They're spaced 24 cells apart, not 21 (I should have counted the width of the beehives). It was a little puzzling because you can't ordinarily get beehives spaced 21 cells, 42 ticks, apart... because 42 isn't a multiple of 4, and you're using p4 stuff to build your rakes and puffers. It was still possible, because weird phase-shifting behavior happens sometimes, but it's pretty rare.

-- Okay, yeah, with 24-cell separation, just drop in a small p48 rake, and that will clean up the beehives. Of course you could just replace the whole huge construction with the same small p48 rake, instead.

A few other suggestions:

1) Images of patterns are confusing and hard to deal with. People would have to count cells to find out what you're talking about, and most folks just won't be motivated to do that. Instead, just post RLE copied out of Golly or wherever, and use the

Code: Select all

tag instead of
if you really want to show a picture.

2) It might be better not to spin off a new thread for every small question. If there had been, say, a thread in General Discussion called "Thread for Newcomer Questions", that always sorts to the top of the list along with Life Links, would that look like a good place to post questions along these lines? Or some other title along those lines? If it seems like a good idea, please feel free to create a thread like that.
