How do rule tables work?
Re: How do rule tables work?
The most relevant information to Golly is available in the builtin Help files: Help -> File Formats - the @RULE section in particular but other sections are also relevant. Further information is available at The RuleTableRepository. See also this post for a nice introduction.
The best thing to do though is look at some of the families of rule tables already available and work through them to understand how they operate. I'd recommend starting with some two state rules first such as those in the Close Life Variants thread. After that have a look at B1x2/S23V to see how more complex behaviour can be emulated in Golly with multiple states.
